Family and Artistic Relations in Polish Women’s Autobiographical Literature examines women’s autobiographical works published in Poland after the year 2000 in a broader cultural context. This volume focuses on the writers’ representation of their relationships with their mothers – many of them traumatized survivors of historical cataclysms, many of them professional artists, many of them struggling to reconcile their creative work with their role as wife and mother. Grzemska sheds light not only on the literary strategies used by the memoirists, but she also helps us understand women’s struggles for an independent voice, for new models of commemoration, for healing. Łódź. Ziemia wymyślona
Na przestrzeni ostatnich dwustu lat Łódź była „miastem amerykańskim” i „ziemią obiecaną”. „Czwartą stolicą” i „ostatnim nieodkrytym miastem”. „Polskim Manchesterem” i „miastem przeklętym”. Miastem „bez historii” i „miastem czterech kultur”. Była czerwona, robotnicza, szara, kreatywna. Łódź jest miastem innym niż wszystkie. Chyba najbliżej jej do Gdyni, chociaż nie posiada tej specyficznej aury utkanej z ogólnonarodowego mitu. Podobnie jednak jak nadbałtyckie „okno na świat” stanowiła niegdyś krainę nieograniczonych możliwości, gdzie z dnia na dzień wzrastały i upadały wielomilionowe fortuny. Łódź. Ziemia wymyślona to moja podróż przez historie Łodzi. Historie, a nie historię, bowiem było ich wiele, niemal tyle, ile osób, które podjęły się niełatwego zadania „opowiedzenia miasta”. Visions of Avant-Garde Film
Warsaw- and London-based filmmakers Franciszka and Stefan Themerson are often recognized internationally as pioneers of the 1930s Polish avant-garde. Yet, from the turn of the century to the end of the 1920s, Poland's literary and art scenes were also producing a rich array of criticism and early experiments with the moving image that set the stage for later developments in the avant-garde.
