Dental caries is an imbalance between the gain and loss of minerals. The minerals are lost from teeth by acids produced by bacteria within the mouth whereas minerals are gained from saliva and fluorides present in the oral cavity. Posterior teeth have fissures while anterior teeth have cingulum or pits. These pits and fissure are most prone to dental decay as food gets trapped in them and are difficult to clean.
