Paul of Aleppo, an archdeacon of the Church of Antioch, journeyed with his father Patriarch Makarios III ibn al-Za'im to Constantinople, Moldavia, Wallachia and the Cossack's lands in 1652-1654, before heading for Moscow. Diese Studie geht der Frage nach, wie sich die Stellung der Frau in Georgien wahrend der Sasanidenzeit (224 bis 651) entwickelte. Die bisherige sozialgeschichtliche Geschlechterforschung Georgiens war durchgehend von Vorurteilen gepragt. Insofern leistet dieses Buch einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Erforschung der Geschlechter-, Mentalitats- und Religionsgeschichte der Kaukasusregion. Dabei wurde der bisherige Forschungsstand nicht nur erganzt, sondern der Gegenstand auch einer differenzierteren Analyse unterzogen. In Altgeorgien wurde eine verhaltnismassig hohe Anerkennung der Frau als kultureller Code nicht nur uber lange Zeitraume, sondern auch uber Perioden kulturellen Niedergangs hinweg aufrechterhalten. So erstaunt es nicht, dass der antike Amazonen-Mythos und das mit Medea verbundene Bild der tatkraftigen Frau gerade dort tradiert wurden. Daher bestanden im alten Georgien offensichtlich auch keine Schwierigkeiten, die Entstehungsgeschichte des georgisch-orthodoxen Christentums mit dem Schicksal von Frauen zu verbinden, deren Historizitat ausschliesslich literarisch bezeugt ist.
