Choreonarratives
Choreonarratives, a collection of essays by classicists, dance scholars, and dance practitioners, explores the uses of dance as a narrative medium. Case studies from Greek and Roman antiquity illustrate how dance contributed to narrative repertoires in their multimodal manifestations, while discussions of modern and contemporary dance shed light on practices, discourses, and ancient legacies regarding the art of dancing stories. Benefitting from the crossover of different disciplinary, historical, and artistic perspectives, the volume looks beyond current narratological trends and investigates the manifold ways in which dance can acquire meaning, disclose storyworlds ranging from myths to individual life-stories, elicit the narratees’ responses, and generate powerful narratives of its own. Expanded Choreographies - Choreographic Histories
From objects to sounds, choreography is expanding beyond dance and human bodies in motion. This book offers one of the rare systematic investigations of expanded choreography as it develops in contemporaneity, and is the first to consider expanded choreography from a trans-historical perspective. Through case studies on different periods of European dance history - ranging from Renaissance dance to William Forsythe's choreographic objects and from Baroque court ballets to digital choreographies - it traces a journey of choreography as a practice transcending its sole association with dancing, moving, human bodies.
Drumming
In 1998, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker returned to two of her greatest childhood loves: pure dance and music by minimalist composer Steve Reich. Rich in twenty years of an abundant choreographic journey, she takes hold of Reich's 'Drumming', a long hypnotic work written for a large percussion ensemble, and gives rise to a feverish and radical show in which the essence seems to have distilled of his style: mathematical patterns, the art of perpetual variation, geometric use of space. 'Drumming' fuses structural refinement, technical virtuosity, the pleasure of dance in its raw state. The energy of kinetic language, costumes by Dries Van Noten and scenography by Jan Versweyveld contribute to extraordinary visual compositions. 'Drumming' has since been taken on stages around the world. The tours were followed by photographers Herman Sorgeloos and Anne Van Aerschot, who today open their extensive photographic archive and offer us a kaleidoscopic glimpse of this iconic spectacle.
