Sabina and the Mystery of the Ogre

Sabina and the Mystery of the Ogre is a fast-paced thriller that winds through tales of encounters of mysteries and near-misses, underlining Sabina's unusual courage in the face of overwhelming sentiment of deeply-rooted traditional practices. ***** "Ogre! Ogre! Ogre!" women shouted. "Here comes the ogre!" voices rose. A vibrating snarl rent the air, sending Sabina into a tremble. Heavy footsteps came down on the ground outside with a force that shook the hut, like the initial tremors of an earthquake. Sabina wanted to scream, but her mouth became dry. She trembled violently. Her lips quavered and bit the earthen floor. Will she survive? Will she endure the bite of that ogre? No, she won't. ...

African Markets and the Utu-Ubuntu Business Model

The persistence of indigenous African markets in the context of a hostile or neglectful business and policy environment makes them worthy of analysis. An investigation of Afrocentric business ethics is long overdue. Attempting to understand the actions and efforts of informal traders and artisans from their own points of view, and analysing how they organise and get by, allows for viable approaches to be identified to integrate them into global urban models and cultures. Using the utu-ubuntu model to understand the activities of traders and artisans in Nairobi’s markets, this book explores how, despite being consistently excluded and disadvantaged, they shape urban spaces in and around the...

This edited volume, Rekindling Embers of the Soul: An Examination of Spirituality Issues Relating to Teacher Education, fills the gap in scholarship by providing information about an understudied aspect of teacher education research. In an education environment that provides an increasing degree of standardization founded upon corporatized materialist values, the concept of spirituality and its importance in shaping the diverse identities of students and teachers becomes neglected. This volume offers ten chapters, which relate the spirituality to teacher education with regard to theory and research, instruction, and content. Both researchers and teachers will appreciate the insights that it offers.

Focusing on Kenya’s path-breaking mobile money project M-Pesa, this book examines and critiques the narratives and institutions of digital financial inclusion as a development strategy for gender equality, arguing for a politics of redistribution to guide future digital financial inclusion projects. One of the most-discussed digital financial inclusion projects, M-Pesa facilitates the transfer of money and access to formal financial services via the mobile phone infrastructure and has grown at a phenomenal rate since its launch in 2007 to reach about 80 per cent of the Kenyan population. Through a socio-legal enquiry drawing on feminist political economy, law and development scholarship an...

Theory of the Novel

In his theory of the novel, Guido Mazzoni explains that novels consist of stories told in any way whatsoever about the experiences of ordinary men and women who exist as contingent beings within time and space. Novels allow readers to step into other lives and other versions of truth, each a small, local world, absolute in its particularity.

For a long time, many American educators and educational stakeholders have drawn their ideas for educational reforms from ideas generated in Europe and Asia for the changing demographics of America’s diverse classrooms. This book is therefore motivated by a bold attempt at advocating for the revision of existing pedagogic fora and the creation and addition of new fora that would provide for the inclusion of thoughts, perspectives and practices of African traditional oral literature in the pedagogical tools of content area classrooms especially in North America. The articles that are presented in this book provide theoretical frameworks for using African traditional oral literature and its ...

Women and the Informal Economy in Urban Africa

In this highly original work, Mary Njeri Kinyanjui explores the trajectory of women's movement from the margins of urbanization into the centres of business activities in Nairobi and its accompanying implications for urban planning. While women in much of Africa have struggled to gain urban citizenship and continue to be weighed down by poor education, low income and confinement to domestic responsibilities due to patriarchic norms, a new form of urban dynamism - partly informed by the informal economy - is now enabling them to manage poverty, create jobs and link to the circuits of capital and labour. Relying on social ties, reciprocity, sharing and collaboration, women's informal 'solidarity entrepreneurialism' is taking them away from the margins of business activity and catapulting them into the centre. Bringing together key issues of gender, economic informality and urban planning in Africa, Kinyanjui demonstrates that women have become a critical factor in the making of a postcolonial city.
