This is the first comprehensive account of prolonged hearing loss and its impact on a language that was once spoken fluently. Although it is currently assumed that hearing loss results in speech deterioration, it is shown that language loss occurs when speakers remain deaf for a long time. The reader is introduced to a significant deaf population — postlingually deafened Yoruba speakers who have been deaf for more than twenty years and who have no access to hearing aids or speech therapy. The 43rd Annual Conference on African Linguistics was held on March 15-17, 2012 at Tulane University. This volume contains 25 of the papers presented at the conference, including the plenaries from Douglas Pulleyblank and Blake Allen, Larry M. Hyman, Laura J. Downing, Ọlásopé Oyèláràn and Ọládiípò Ajíbóyè, Salikoko S. Mufwene, Ọladele Awobuluyi, and Victoria Nyst. A grammar of Fwe
This book provides a first-ever comprehensive overview of the grammatical structure of Fwe. Fwe is a Bantu language spoken on the border between Zambia and Namibia, by some 20,000 people. Very little previous documentation exists on the language, and the current description of Fwe is based exclusively on newly collected field data. It includes an analysis of the grammatical structure of Fwe, followed by basic cultural information on greetings, a Fwe narrative with its English translation, and a lexicon comprising some 2200 Fwe lexemes with their English translation. This book is intended as a resource for linguists, whether interested in African languages, Bantu languages, language typology, or general linguistics.
