Oleg Krishtal is a world-famous neuroscientist, one of the very few our contemporaries included in the list of top scientists and scholars of modern times. In addition to his internationally known research papers, he wrote two fiction books, both published in the leading Russian literary magazines: 1) The novel "Homunculus" (awarded with the gold medal "For the best novel of the year 1995"). In 2000, the novel was published in France under the title "Moi et Mon Double". 2) The novel-essay "To the Singing of Birds", which is a breath-taking combination of postmodern irony, confessional insights, humor, anguish, joyous and sad recollections, and love of life the sense of which yet to be found. Its English translation is presented here.

Voltage-Gated Calcium Channels

This book covers the tremendous progress in the current understanding of the molecular physiology of voltage-gated calcium channels. This book includes unparalleled insights into structural features of calcium channels due to X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM, which in turn yielded critical information into how these channels function under normal and pathophysiological conditions, and how they interact with calcium channel therapeutics. The chapters investigate how, with the advent of high throughput genome sequencing, numerous mutations in various calcium channel genes have been identified in patients with neurological, cardiovascular, neuropsychiatric and other disorders. This is further ...

Ion Channels

In the past few years, the scientific community has witnessed rapid and significant progress in the study of ion channels. Technological advance ment in biophysics, molecular biology, and immunology has been greatly accelerated, making it possible to conduct experiments that were deemed very difficult if not impossible in the past. For example, patch-clamp tech niques can now be used to measure ionic currents generated by almost any type of cell, thereby allowing us to analyze single-channel events. It is now possible to incorporate purified ion channel components into lipid bilayers to reconstitute an "excitable membrane." Gene cloning and monoclonal antibody techniques provide us with new ...

Life in Science

This book is a collection of stories, reflections and advice written by proficient scientists. They address the question of what doing science means to them, and describe attitudes and working practices that have proved effective and rewarding. The book is aimed in particular at young people who are attracted by science or already undertaking undergraduate studies, and who are considering making science their long-term profession. It will also be helpful and revealing to early-career scientists who are searching for their own best route to success. The book serves as a platform for experienced scientists to describe their original inclination, how that subjective disposition found its expres...

Acetylcholinesterase: Old Questions and New Developments

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is a primary regulator of cholinergic signaling within and out of the central nervous system. It has been studied extensively for several decades, yet many basic questions about its regulation, composition and functions remain open. Thus, neither the full impact of AChE’s activities on neuronal development, maintenance and functioning nor the reasons for why and how different AChE molecular forms are being synthesized and degraded are fully known yet, although recent evidence suggests the involvement of micro-RNA regulators in both of these aspects. The identification of the anchoring proteins, PRiMA and ColQ, stimulates studies on AChE’s assembly and its spec...
