This book considers Russian, Czech and Slovak fiction in the late communist and early post-communist periods. It focuses on the most innovative trend to emerge in this period, on those writers who, during and after the collapse of communism, characterised themselves as 'liberators' of literature. It shows how these writers in their fiction and critical work reacted against the politicisation of literature by Marxist-Leninist and dissident ideologues, rejecting the conventional perception of literature as moral teacher, and redefining the nature and purpose of writing. The book demonstrates how this quest, enacted in the works of these writers, served for many critics and readers as a metaphor for the wider disorientation and crisis precipitated by the collapse of communism.

This report summarizes the Bureau of Mines noise-control research program from 1972 to 1982. Each segment of the mining industry--under- ground coal, underground hardrock, surface mining, and processing plants--has different noise-control problems because of vast differences in working procedures, equipment, and workplace design. The Bureau has identified the most serious noise problems in each segment and has developed strategies for attacking these problems. This publication points out the need for noise control in the mining industry, discusses Federal regulations governing worker exposure to noise, and describes the Bureau's overall approach to mining noise- control research. It traces t...

Chemistry of Nucleosides and Nucleotides

The present volume is the first of a projected four-volume treatise. This volume contains the following chapters: "Synthesis and Reaction of Pyrimidine Nucleosides," "Synthesis and Properties of Purine Nucleosides and Nucleotides," and "Synthesis and Properties of Oligonucleotides." These three chapters were selected for inclusion in Volume I because the areas have provided the basis and impetus for the initiation and development of the other areas of research, which will be described in subsequent volumes. Each chapter is rather comprehensive in nature and should provide a ready reference source for not only the novice but also the experienced investigator or researcher. The chapters have b...
