Home Groan

A deity laments her lost loves. A pickpocket steals more than just money. A young man wrestles with the colour of the homes he builds. In Home Groan, we take a deep look at Penang. From idyllic beaches to dangerous jungle, reflections on the past to current issues, island living to mainland life, we explore our beloved home state in both prose and poetry, spinning tall tales and telling it as it is. This is your Penang. This is your home. Come groan with us.

The Phantom Heroine

Zeitlin's study centers on the seventeenth century, one of the most interesting and creative periods of Chinese literature and politically one of the most traumatic, witnessing the overthrow of the Ming, the Manchu conquest, and the subsequent founding of the Qing. Drawing on fiction, drama, poetry, medical cases, and visual culture, the author departs from more traditional literary studies, which tend to focus on a single genre or author. Ranging widely across disciplines, she integrates detailed analyses of great literary works with insights drawn from the history of medicine, art history, comparative literature, anthropology, religion, and performance studies. The Phantom Heroine probes the complex literary and cultural roots of the Chinese ghost tradition. Zeitlin is the first to address its most remarkable feature: the phenomenon of verse attributed to phantom writers - that is, authors actually reputed to be spirits of the deceased. This book should appeal to readers interested in Chinese studies, gender studies, comparative literature, performance studies, the history of religion, and of course, ghost stories and the occult

Comments from author's students Kiveli Venz Paneda The textbook was very helpful & student/user-friendly. It can be easily appreciated by those who opt for self-studying whether they have or lack any previous knowledge and/or experience in speaking Chinese (Mandarin). However, it is better understood when with the guidance of a teacher. The concepts & the basics were discussed thoroughly & therefore establishes a good foundation for those who want to learn the language. Harold Diokno Basic Mandarin A is a very useful tool for studying Hanyu. Not only does it provide realistic and simplified lessons, it also gives the students a smooth and navigable approach to learning a rather complicated language, through its exercises, vocabulary and supplementary notes. There are relatable and situational examples after every lesson, not to mention the updated and easy-to-learn drills on Chinese characters.
