This book contains the proceedings of the Third Australasian Congress on Applied Mechanics (ACAM2002). The Congress was held to provide an international forum for researchers, industry practitioners, engineers and postgraduate scholars to exchange and disseminate knowledge and experience of the most recent advances with a focus on the behaviour of solids. Topics include: biomechanics; constitutive modelling; damage; fracture; fatigue; dynamics; impact; vibration; geo-mechanics; tribology; machining and more.
The Finite Element Method in Engineering is the only book to provide a broad overview of the underlying principles of finite element analysis and where it fits into the larger context of other mathematically based engineering analytical tools. This is an updated and improved version of a finite element text long noted for its practical applications approach, its readability, and ease of use. Students will find in this textbook a thorough grounding of the mathematical principles underlying the popular, analytical methods for setting up a finite element solution based on mathematical equations. The book provides a host of real-world applications of finite element analysis, from structural desi...
Offers information on the fundamental principles, processes, methods and procedures related to fibre-reinforced composites. The book presents a comparative view, and provides design properties of polymeric, metal, ceramic and cement matrix composites. It also gives current test methods, joining techniques and design methodologies.
High-speed impact dynamics is of interest in the fundamental sciences, e.g., astrophysics and space sciences, and has a number of important applications in military technologies, homeland security and engineering. When compared with experiments or numerical simulations, analytical approaches in impact mechanics only seldom yield useful results. However, when successful, analytical approaches allow us to determine general laws that are not only important in themselves but also serve as benchmarks for subsequent numerical simulations and experiments. The main goal of this monograph is to demonstrate the potential and effectiveness of analytical methods in applied high-speed penetration mechani...
The last decade has seen a significant growth in the processing and fabrication of advanced composite materials. This volume contains the up-to-date contributions of those with working experience in the automotive, marine, aerospace and construction field. Starting with modern technologies concerned with assessing the change in material microstructure in terms of the processing parameters, methodologies are offered to account for tradeoffs between the fundamental variables such as temperature and pressure that control the product quality. The book contains new ideas and data, not available in the open literature.
Despite advances in robot technology, in which industrial manipulators have replaced mechanisms, cam mechanisms still find important industrial applications in the textile, food processing and manufacturing industries. This book is a modern, up-to-date treatise on the important subject of cam synthesis. Cam mechanisms have been studied from different points of view, namely, kinematic synthesis, dynamic synthesis, analysis, design, optimization and manufacturing. This book is oriented to the kinematic synthesis of cam mechanisms in a unified framework, i.e. that spatial, spherical and planar cam mechanisms are integrated in the same formulation. Traditionally, the synthesis of the three types...
Advanced ceramic composites are the focus of intense research and development today because these materials offer a unique mix of properties that make them useful and economical for major engineering applications. As part of this R&D effort, new tools for characterization, evaluation and testing have been developed and are in current use. This book brings together leading materials researchers to report on these developments. In-depth reports cover evaluation and test methods as they relate to the design of specific advanced ceramic composite materials and their applications. The reports are supplemented with extensive test result data and illustrated with numerous micrographs and schematics.
This book started its life as a series of lectures given by the second author from the 1970’s onwards to students in their third and fourth years in the Department of Mechanics and Mathematics at Rostov State University. For these lectures there was also an audience of engineers and applied mechanicists who wished to understand the functional analysis used in contemporary research in their fields. These people were not so much interested in functional analysis itself as in its applications; they did not want to be told about functional analysis in its most abstract form, but wanted a guided tour through those parts of the analysis needed for their applications. The lecture notes evolved ov...
Segregation is a pervasive phenomenon whereby a flowing granular mass consisting of particles with diverse physical properties becomes spatially inhomogeneous. In the industrial sector that deals with the handling and processing of bulk solids, this non-uniformity is highly undesirable since blend homogeneity is generally a stringent requirement of most products. In the arena of geophysical flows, segregation can enhance the destructive capabilities of natural events such as avalanches and landslides. During the last 15 years, these issues have provided motivation and fostered collaborations between the communities of mathematicians, engineers, industrial researchers, and physicists to develop predictive models of segregation by integrating the perspectives and approaches of each. The collection of unique papers brings to light many of the perplexing scientific and technical issues in our current understanding of this complex phenomenon. It addresses advances in experiment, computational modeling and theory. This volume is one of the very few books devoted entirely to problems of segregation of particulate solids.
