Days of Knights and Damsels

Kids can re-create a long-ago world of kings, castles, jousts, jesters, damsels, magic fairies, and Robin Hood—all they need are their imaginations, materials they can find at home, and the activities in this book. Dressing up in a coat of armor made from plastic milk jugs, whipping up a batch of curds and whey, writing secret messages in invisible ink, and telling time with a sand glass made from soda bottles are just some of the fun projects. Every activity is illustrated, and sidebars highlight colorful facts about life hundreds of years ago.

War, Government, and Society in the Medieval Crown of Aragon

The focus of this collection of articles by Donald J. Kagay is the effect of the expansion of royal government on the societies of the medieval Crown of Aragon. He shows how the extensive episodes of warfare during the 13th and 14th centuries served as a catalyst for the extension of the king's law and government across the varied topography and political landscape of eastern Spain. In the long conflicts against Spanish Islam and neighbouring Christian states, the relationships of royal to customary law, of monarchical to aristocratic power, and of Christian to Jewish and Muslim populations, all became issues that marked the transition of the medieval Crown of Aragon to the early modern states of Catalonia, Aragon and Valencia, and finally to the modern Spanish nation.

The Family Album

  • Categories: Art

This book is an examination of the use of the family album in contemporary Spanish culture. Through the analysis of films, narratives, painting, and a photographic exhibition produced from the end of Franco's dictatorship to the present, Kim interrogates how the family album serves as a critical instrument to reflect on the treatment of the past in contemporary Spain, the recuperation of repressed identities, nostalgia for collective memory symptomatic of the cultural discontent with the erosion of a national boundary due to globalization and the increasing claim of diversity, and ethical concerns for immigration. This study explores a broad range of works by canonical as well as less studied writers and artists, including Juan Goytisolo, Carlos Saura, and Marta Balletbo-Coll. Yeon-Soo Kim is Assistant Professor of Spanish at Rutgers University.
