Developing the Therapeutic Relationship

What makes therapy work? Clearly, the therapeutic alliance is an important component of a successful relationship between therapist and client, but how does it fit into the relationship more broadly conceived? A better question might be "What works with whom and in which circumstances?' In this unique book, master clinicians and psychotherapy researchers examine how technique and the therapeutic relationship are inseparably intertwined. Using a variety of theoretical and research "lenses" and drawing on various models of psychotherapy, including psychodynamic therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, emotion-focused therapy, and brief family therapy, the contributors discuss the factors affecting client outcomes. The link between relationship processes and technique is bought to life in a rich array of engaging case studies that demonstrate how successful therapists negotiate the relationship, make key moment-to-moment decisions, and promote positive change in their clients.

The SAGE Encyclopedia of Abnormal and Clinical Psychology

Abnormal and clinical psychology courses are offered in psychology programs at universities worldwide, but the most recent major encyclopedia on the topic was published many years ago. Although general psychology handbooks and encyclopedias include essays on abnormal and clinical psychology, such works do not provide students with an accessible reference for understanding the full scope of the field. The SAGE Encyclopedia of Abnormal and Clinical Psychology, a 7-volume, A-Z work (print and electronic formats), will be such an authoritative work. Its more than 1,400 entries will provide information on fundamental approaches and theories, various mental health disorders, assessment tools and p...

The Society for Psychotherapy Research (SPR) is devoted to the development and dissemination of research, as well as the integration of empirical, theoretical, and clinical knowledge in psychotherapy. A highlight of the SPR annual meeting is the presidential address, wherein the president delivers what many view as the most important presentation of their career. In Visions of Psychotherapy, Bernhard Strauss, Jacques Barber, and Louis Castonguay, three recent past presidents, compile the preceding 20 presidential addresses from SPR into a single volume. Then, the living presidents (19 of the 20) comment on how the visions they described in their addresses have developed over time.

Assessments and Measures in Psychotherapy Research: Going Beyond Self-Report Data

Tailoring the treatment to the individual patient can improve the effectiveness of psychotherapy. To do so, the treatment or strategy with the best prognosis for the individual patient can be selected at the beginning of therapy. Furthermore, the therapeutic approach can be adapted during the course of treatment. To support the therapist in such decisions, prediction algorithms are used, which are able to process complex and comprehensive data (precision mental health). Statistical methods used in psychotherapy research to analyze data and develop predictive models have recently become more advanced. However, algorithms cannot do better than what the underlying data provide them in terms of information. Therefore, our predictions and recommendations could benefit from a broader range of data beyond the traditional patient- or therapist-rated questionnaires.

The book is intended for scholars in the field of organized helping as well as for students and researchers of communication and discourse / conversation analysis in professional and organized contexts. It is also addressed to practitioners interested in learning more about the micro- and meso-management of their working relationships.

The Connected Species

Human beings have succeeded as the most dominant species on earth in large part due to our need to connect and cooperate. It was our ability to socialize and connect that catapulted our species to phenomenal heights of innovation, through collaboration and specialization. This drive has fine-tuned our unconscious perception of faces, facial expressions, body language, and touch. Our primitive drive to connect changes how we perceive the world and the people around us. We see, hear, empathize with, and understand others differently depending on whether they are a member of our in-group or not. This unconscious drive to connect can draw us together, but it also emphasizes the differences betwe...

Seth Warren illuminate the impact of psychoanalytic ideas and theories - as well as cultural, historical, and intellectual trends - on each approach.
