Mechanics of Mixtures
This book presents a unified treatment of the mechanics of mixtures of several constituents within the context of continuum mechanics. After an introduction to the basic theory in the first few chapters, the book deals with a detailed exposition of the mechanics of a mixture of a fluid and an elastic solid, which is either isotropic or anisotropic and is capable of undergoing large deformations. Issues regarding the specification of boundary conditions for mixtures are discussed in detail and several boundary value and initial-boundary value problems are solved. The status of some special theories like those of Darcy and Biot are discussed. Pollution Abatement by Fiber Modification
The research goal undertaken was to develop systems capable of abating the pollution resulting from the discharge of lignosulfonates or bleach plant effluent by finding a suitable use for these pollutants. It was desired to devise procedures for the attachment of lignosulfonates or other lignin-derived pollutants to wood or pulp fibers to create useful fiber-polymer composites. The plan was predicated upon the then unrecognized potential of fiber reactive dye chemistry as a general foundation for fiber modification. The report describes research to determine whether the chemistry developed for dyeing cotton was applicable to wood derived fibers of differing morphology and chemical composition. A typical dichloro-s-triazine fiber reactive dye was selected because of its availability and because after reaction it would still be expected to contain one reactive chlorine suitable for the attachment of pollutants. The dye was found to react with a wood-derived fibers suitable for the subsequent attachment of lignosulfonates or bleach plant effluents. The effects of various reaction conditions including pH and time, were investigated and are reported.
Studies in Natural Products Chemistry
Natural Products Chemistry continues to grow at an increasing pace and this growth is reflected in the present volume of Studies in Natural Products Chemistry, which is the 20th of this series. The first 20 volumes were largely devoted to structure and synthesis of various classes of natural products, irrespective of their bioactivity. Subsequent volumes of this series will however be devoted to the chemistry of bioactive natural products and will therefore a departure from the earlier volumes.The present volume contains contributions from a number of eminent scientists and covers interesting reviews on terpenes, alkaloids and other types of natural products reported from terrestrial and marine sources. Comprehensive indexes covering all the 20 volumes have been prepared which include a Cumulative General Subject Index along with more focused Cumulative Indices on Organic Synthesis, Pharmacological Activity and Biological Source. This comprehensive indexing of the volumes should make the entire series much more valuable and user-friendly.
