Patrons of the Old Faith is the first full-length study on the Catholic nobility in the Dutch Republic. Based on a detailed prosopographical analysis and through the examination of their marriage strategies, interaction with Protestants, religiosity and contributions to the Holland Mission, Jaap Geraerts shows how the behaviour of the Catholic nobility was highly distinctive and differed from their co-religionists and Protestant peers as it was influenced by a specific set of noble and Catholic values. Due to the synthesis of their noble and confessional identities, the Dutch Catholic nobility in Utrecht and Guelders acted as patrons of their faith and were instrumental for the survival of Catholicism in the Dutch Republic.
The Working Papers of Hugo Grotius
The Working Papers of Hugo Grotius is the first full-length study of the handwritten documents initially used by the author of Mare Liberum (1609) and De Jure Belli ac Pacis (1625) in his day-to-day activities as a scholar, lawyer, and politician, but subsequently incorporated into his own or other archives. Martine van Ittersum reconstructs a process of transmission, dispersal, and loss that started during Grotius’ lifetime and ended with the papers’ auction in 1864. This is also a study of archival afterlives. Our understanding of Grotius’ life and work is shaped by the conscious decisions of previous generations to retain or discard documents, frequently for the sake of individual lives and careers, family honour and/or larger political and religious ends.

This bibliography provides descriptions of 432 manuscripts from Europe and the United States, of which 341 contain visual imagery in various media. The manuscripts feature tripartite emblems proper, as well as festivity books, hieroglyphic texts, proto-emblematic material, allegories, triumphs, symbolic source books, schemata, devotional handbooks, and libri amicorum with emblematic imagery.

News and Politics in Early Modern Europe (1500-1800)
This volume presents thirteen contributions relating to various aspects of the relationship between news and politics in early modern Europe. A growing range of printed news media started interacting during this period, affecting the political culture of the time. This is clearly illustrated by the contents of this volume. In addition to oral and written forms of news distribution, all sorts of printed pamphlets, newspapers, news books and other periodicals examining the widely varying facets of the interaction between news and politics are presented. There are various other sources which also shed light on this interaction, such as the memoirs of politicians, festival books, political songs and theatre texts. These sources, drawn on by the history of the press to a lesser degree, are discussed in connection with questions about propaganda, censorship, the formation of public opinion, news suppliers and political networks. The essays offer a stimulating overview of the changes and continuity in this field.
