The Buen Retiro, a royal retreat and pleasure palace, was built for Philip IV on the outskirts of Madrid in the 1630s. With its superb display of paintings by Vel zquez and other contemporary artists, the palace became a showcase for the art and culture of Spain's Golden Age. A Palace for a King, first published in 1980, provides a pioneering total history of the construction, decoration, and uses of a major royal palace, emphasising the relationship of art and politics at a critical moment in European history. produced on different aspects of the history of the palace and its decoration since the 1970s. A number of new, unpublished illustrations have been added, and many of the plates are now reproduced in colour. The publication of this edition gains added importance from the fact that plans for the expansion of the Prado Museum include the restoration of the Hall of Realms to approximate its original appearance, as reconstructed in this volume.
The exhibition brings together some of the most important paintings in the Royal Collection from the Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace. Usually on public view during the annual Summer Opening of the Palace, the paintings will be shown in The Queen?s Gallery while Reservicing works are carried out to protect the historic building for future generations. The Picture Gallery was originally designed by the architect John Nash for George IV to display his collection of Dutch, Flemish and Italian Old Master paintings. This monograph is the first to chart the entire career of Irish artist Conor Harrington, from the nascent graffiti of his teenage years to his status as an internationally recognised artist. Striking photography captures the visual evolution of a unique practice that has united the opulent ceremony of the baroque with the stark immediacy of graffiti. Equally celebrated for both his large-scale gallery work and vast outdoor pieces, the book is split into Indoor and Outdoor sections. Harrington's artistic journey takes in Ireland, the UK, the US, Norway, Spain, Poland, Brazil and even the Bethlehem Wall, and is supplemented by fascinating documentary photography alongside the artist's personal narrative. Jane Neal's newly commissioned essay The Dance of Mind introduces the monograph, whilst an informal Q&A between Harrington and journalist JJ O'Donoghue illuminates the methods of his practice. An accompanying zine entitled 'Before 2008'-designed to echo the DIY means of Harrington's youth-profiles the rebellious, creative landscape of his Cork adolescence.
