Terminological Approaches in the European Context
This volume provides a picture of state-of-the-art studies on terminology at the European level. Addressing a range of linguistic and cultural topics, it illustrates the diversity of terminological approaches, uses and solutions. A variety of national contexts and areas, from economics and law through to gender, environment and education, is explored to illustrate emerging national issues and practices in view of measuring and assessing them against European standards. The book discusses the selection of languages and cultural attitudes that characterize European Union countries, challenging and productive as they can be. Simple and engaging on the surface, it is nonetheless a highly original and sophisticated work, remarkable for both its literary and its theatrical mastery. The fact that it is one of the very few of Shakespeare's plays not to draw on a narrative source suggests the degree to which it reflects his deepest imaginative concerns. Corpus Use in Cross-linguistic Research
Cross-linguistic research is a fruitful field of language inquiry that has benefited enormously from the use of corpora. As sources of linguistic data of various kinds and as tools for language processing, corpora have shaped the development of cross-linguistic research, enabling both language description and practical applications. This volume contains twelve studies that emphasize the usefulness and usability of parallel corpora in accurately exploring the structure and use of seven under-researched languages and language varieties. The first part emphasizes the role of corpus-based descriptive analyses at the lexicogrammatical and discursive levels, as a first step on the way towards concrete applications like translation or language teaching. The Terminology of Marine Pollution by Plastics and Microplastics
As a specialised language, the terminology of marine pollution by plastics and microplastics is composed mainly of technical-scientific terms from the field of marine ecology, along with general-language words used with a domain-specific meaning. Since there are few existing studies focusing on the linguistic-terminological aspects of ecology, this book analyses the nature, characteristics, and possible applications of the terminology of marine plastic pollution by observing its degree of technicity in different textual genres. To this end, a small but significant corpus of texts embracing three genres (scientific, informative and normative texts) was created and processed with the aid of a software for terminological extraction. Following the results of software analysis, this book shows that this specialised language is mostly used in an expert-to-expert communicative context, although some concepts are simplified and used in other communicative situations.
