Banana Economy involves production front and marketing arrangements of banana as it possesses commercial, nutritional as well as environmental values. In Assam and Meghalaya people depend on different types of banana as a source of livelihood and wellbeing. The government has already planned for boosting the production of banana both for domestic consumption and exports.
Fruit and vegetables – your dietary essentials
The International Year of Fruits and Vegetables 2021 (IYFV), as declared by the UN General Assembly in Resolution A/RES/74/244, aims at raising awareness of, directing policy attention to, and sharing good practices on the nutritional and health benefits of fruit and vegetable consumption, the contribution of fruit and vegetable consumption to the promotion of diversified, balanced and healthy diets and lifestyles, and reducing loss and waste of fruits and vegetables. This background paper outlines the benefits of fruit and vegetable consumption, but also examines the various aspects of the fruit and vegetable sector from a food systems approach: from sustainable production and trade to loss and waste management. This paper provides an overview of the sector and a framework and a starting point for discussion for the Year, highlighting the interlinkages of stakeholders and key issues to be considered for action during the IYFV.

Voluntary Standards and Certification for Environmentally and Socially Responsible Agricultural Production and Trade
This publication is a summary of the presentations and discussions that took place during the meeting on "Voluntary Standards and Certification for Responsible Agricultural Production and Trade" organized by FAO in April 2004. It presents the situation of the main import markets for certified products and the evolution of demand. Case studies aimed at comparing sustainable farming methods with conventional methods are presented. These comparisons focus on production cost, yield, price premium and net profit. The difficulties with which the producers are confronted are analysed and possible solutions to overcome them are explored. The publication also discusses the roles of nongovernmental organizations, private stakeholders and other institutions involved in sustainable agriculture and explores ossibilities for greater collaboration among them.

Workplace safety and environmental sustainability can be promoted by agreed standards, certification and labelling. Involving women and youth in responsible investment in agriculture and food systems in Ghana
Women and youth-led agri-enterprises (WYE) (which may also be operating as family businesses) in agricultural value chains have been identified as catalysts for rural transformation given their potential for creating employment and stimulating value addition both on and off-farm. Given that agriculture and food systems are likely to remain the key generators of employment in Ghana over the coming decades, and that 80% of all activities in the midstream of food value chain are undertaken by SMEs in Africa. It is very much necessary to generate the evidence to support the argument that family, women and youth-led agribusinesses have a key role to play in the rural transformation pathway underway in Ghana.
