Teaching First-Year Communication Courses
In this book, eleven teacher-scholars of communication provide a robust study of the challenges and opportunities facing those who teach first-year communication courses. The first half of the volume offers paradigmatic analyses, including a survey of the ecology of the first-year course, a plea to integrate our first-year courses into our research agendas, a study of the gap between scholarship and pedagogy within rhetoric, a proposal for seven core competencies to unify the various first-year communication courses, and an argument for a critical communication paradigm. The second half details innovations in classroom practice, such as the teaching techniques of social justice pedagogues, team-based learning as a model for the public speaking course, response and feedback techniques in teaching public speaking at the University of Copenhagen, teaching online speech as a new course focused on the unique challenges of digital communication, and the role of oral interpretation and performance classes in the first-year curriculum. The Wolf at the Door
Discovers a Holocaust subtext in Kubrick's films, culminating in his 1980 adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel "The Shining". Maintains that this is reflected in his depiction of harsh struggles with and over power and violence. Several of his films deal with war and state power. "The Shining" is seen as an artistic and philosophical response to the horrors of World War II. Among the influences on the filmmaker are Hilberg's "The Destruction of the European Jews", Kubrick's Jewish past, and his early years that were affected by fascism and war. Kubrick's marriage into an artistic German family also contributed to his preoccupation with the history of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, which were indirectly reflected in his oeuvre.
Microhistories of Communication Studies
The story of an academic discipline is usually conveyed in grand movements and long spans, but it can also be told through the lives of individual scholars, through the development of specialties, through the creation and change of departments, and through the formation and transformation of organizations. Critical and Comparative Rhetoric
Through the lenses of comparative and critical rhetoric, this book theorizes how alternative approaches to communication can transform legal meanings and legal outcomes, infusing them with more inclusive participation, equity and justice.
