Luke-Acts and Jewish Historiography
In this book, Samson Uytanlet states his observation that there is an unnecessary disjunction between Luke's theology and literature in previous studies on Luke-Acts: Luke's theology is typically studied in light of Jewish writings while Luke's literature is studied in relation with Greco-Roman works. The author shows that there are theological, literary, and ideological elements that ancient Greco-Roman and Jewish writings share which are also present in Luke's work. In areas where they diverge, however, Luke-Acts shows closer affinity to Jewish writings.
The Fiery Holy Spirit
The baptism with the Spirit and fire has been a major area of study by theologians and has been pursued by the historical church seeking God’s holiness and power; yet its relationship to judgment has often been ignored. In each instance, Luke’s presentation is examined to determine the Spirit’s role in the process of judgment. Through the Spirit, Jesus judges, cleanses, purges, and divides his people from the world. Luke portrays the Spirit as the executive power of Jesus’ reign as judge, exposing, opposing, and condemning those who reject the gospel.

He reads the works not only against their Jewish “background” but also as early Jewish literature. In doing so, he questions the traditional classification of Luke-Acts as a “Greek” or Gentile-Christian text. To support his assertions, Dr. Oliver’s literary-historical investigation explores the question of Torah praxis in each book, citing evidence that suggests several ritual Jewish practices remained fixtures in the Jesus movement and that Jewish followers of Jesus played key roles in forming the ekklesia well into the first century CE.
