This book contains the contributions to the Workshop on the Physics and Applications of High Brightness Electron Beams, held in July 2002 in Sardinia, Italy. This workshop had a broad international representation from the fields of intense electron sources, free-electron lasers, advanced accelerators, and ultra-fast laser-plasma, beam-plasma and laser-beam physics. The interdisciplinary participants were brought together to discuss advances in the creation and understanding of ultra-fast, ultra-high brightness electron beams, and the unique experimental opportunities in frontier high-energy-density and radiation-source physics which are offered by these scientific tools. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in: OCo Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings- (ISTP- / ISI Proceedings)OCo Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings)"
Tremendous technological developments and rapid progress in theory have opened a new area of modern physics called high-field electrodynamics: the systematic study of the interaction of relativistic electrons or positrons with ultrahigh-intensity, coherent electromagnetic radiation. This advanced undergraduate/graduate-level text provides a
These proceedings cover new developments for a number of the most advanced methods for acceleration of heavy ions, protons, electrons and positrons.
This is the sixth in a series of international workshops on high-power and high-energy density microwave devices for accelerator, plasma physics, and defense applications. Past workshops were held in Dubna, Montauk, Hayama, Pajaro Dunes, and Snowbird. The theme is research and development of techniques to increase microwave energy density and peak power in active and passive microwave devices and components ranging from L-band to W-band. The scope of this workshop has now been broadened to include radar and high power microwave (HPM) systems, space exploration, neutron sources, and even plasma heating and current drive in controlled thermonuclear fusion research.
The 20th ICFA Advanced Beam Dynamics Workshop took place from April 8 to 12, 2002 at Fermilab, co-sponsored by Fermilab and KEK. The theme of this workshop was "High Intensity and High Brightness Hadron Beams". The workshop covered a broad range of topics associated with such beams, including reviews of the performance of existing high-intensity hadron machines, overviews of planned high-intensity hadron sources and projects, presentations on accelerator physics issues, technical systems designs, and applications of these beams in high energy physics, nuclear physics, heavy ion fusion, medicine, industry, and other fields.
This book documents comprehensive reviews and state-of-the-art studies in the dynamics, diagnostics, and collimation of charged-particle beam halo and in beam-beam interaction. Challenges and solutions to major accelerator facilities in Europe, Asia, and America in the domain of high intensity, high energy, and high brightness charged particles are presented. Latest breakthroughs in physical analysis, engineering design, and experimental tests are included.
The proceedings of the 10th Beam Instrumentation Workshop contains papers discussing the design principles and engineering issues of beam diagnostic and control instrumentation for charged particle accelerators and beam transport lines. The papers, presented at the 2002 Workshop, consist of tutorials, invited talks, and contributed oral and poster presentations.
This conference was about the generation and application of high power beams of electrons and ions by pulsed power technology. Pulsed power compresses electrical energy in both space and time to efficiently create devices that have both high power and high energy content. This electrical energy can be converted into high power beams of electrons, ions and to generate high power microwave sources. High power electron beams are used to power microwave sources, for radiographing dense objects, for materials modification, or for various biological sterilization applications. High power ion beams are being explored for making new high-strength materials, nanopowders, and other commercial applications. Topics include: pulsed power technology, pulsed power switches, radiography, electron eams, electron beam applications, ion beam physics and applications, theory and modeling, as well as beams from ultra-intense lasers.
