British Islam and English Law

British Islam and English Law

  • Categories: Law

British Islam and English Law presents a novel argument about the nature and place of groups in society. The encounter with Islam has led English law to tread a line between two theoretical models, liberal individualism and multiculturalism, competing for dominance over the law of organised religion. This philosophical rivalry has generated a set of seemingly intractable conflicts between individual and community, religion and state, nation and culture. This book resurrects the long-buried theory of classical pluralism to address and resolve these tensions. Applying this to five understudied institutions that give structure and form to British Islam – banks, charities, schools, elections, clans – it outlines and justifies the reforms that would optimise the relationship between law and religion. Unflinching and unorthodox, this book places law and theory in context, employs innovative methods such as nudge theory and applied history, and provides detailed answers to hard questions about British Islam.

Pseudo-differential Operators and the Nash-Moser Theorem

Pseudo-differential Operators and the Nash-Moser Theorem

This book presents two essential and apparently unrelated subjects. The first, microlocal analysis and the theory of pseudo-differential operators, is a basic tool in the study of partial differential equations and in analysis on manifolds. The second, the Nash-Moser theorem, continues to be fundamentally important in geometry, dynamical systems and nonlinear PDE. Each of the subjects, which are of interest in their own right as well as for applications, can be learned separately. But the book shows the deep connections between the two themes, particularly in the middle part, which is devoted to Littlewood-Paley theory, dyadic analysis, and the paradifferential calculus and its application to interpolation inequalities. An important feature is the elementary and self-contained character of the text, to which many exercises and an introductory Chapter $0$ with basic material have been added. This makes the book readable by graduate students or researchers from one subject who are interested in becoming familiar with the other. It can also be used as a textbook for a graduate course on nonlinear PDE or geometry.

Bradley's Dragons

“Bradley's Dragons is a magical journey that has a great message on handling bullying. It was an exciting adventure that my son couldn't put down.” - Creative Child Magazine (winner of their 2020 Children's Book Of The Year award) “A compelling cast of characters with rich backstories round out this fantastical story of a scared kid learning to stand up to bullies and be true to himself.” - Booklife “This book is seriously awesome! 5 stars are rare for us, yet we’d give this one 7 if that were possible. Seriously, I could barely put it down – great characters, good plot lines, enough depth, and breadth to really get into it. And finally, a tale told fully that will have you bit...

Rethinking Law and Religion

  • Categories: Law

This incisive book delineates the development of Law and Religion as a sub-discipline, critically reflecting on the author’s own role in constructing the field. It develops a subversive social systems theory in order to take both law and religion seriously and to challenge them equally.

Cohabitation and Religious Marriage

  • Categories: Law

Cohabiting couples and those entering religious-only marriages all too often end up with inadequate legal protection when the relationship ends. Yet, despite this shared experience, the linkages and overlaps between these two groups have largely been ignored in the legal literature. Based on wide-ranging empirical studies, this timely book brings together scholars working in both areas to explore the complexities of the law, the different ways in which individuals experience and navigate the existing legal framework and the potential solutions for reform. Illuminating pressing implications for social policy, this is an invaluable resource for policy makers, practitioners, researchers and students of family law.
