Providing a comprehensive and authoritative analyses of the impact of the Eurozone crisis on the European social dimension since 2010 - understood as the European Union’s (EU) competence in employment and social policy - this book focusses on developments in five policy areas (employment, poverty and social exclusion, pensions, wages and healthcare), all of which form part of the EU’s economic reform strategy, Europe 2020. It combines original empirical material and uses a unique theoretical approach to analyse the issue of EU governance and reveals that ‘progress’ under Europe 2020 has its consequences; notably a strengthened Brussels-led neoliberal prescription for EU social and employment policy problems. By drawing insights from political sociology and the strategic-relational approach to actors/institutions, this book will be of interest to students and scholars interested in EU politics, EU governance, political sociology, public policy and European integration.

The Spirit of Romance

The Spirit of Romance

The Spirit of Romance is a collection of fifteen unrelated short stories. They were written over a number of years and originated from a variety of sources of inspiration. The over riding inspiration for the stories came from my all encompassing belief in the resilience and strength of the human spirit and heart. The fact that I am a hopeless romantic also had a great deal to do with the creation of my characters and their situations. In each story I attempted to take ordinary people and place them in extraordinary situations. I hoped to illustrate the awesome magnificence of the human spirit and the mighty power of true love. How the spirit of love, whether it be the love a father has for his son or the bond between soulmates can survive even death. Within its pages you will find ghosts of both a congenial and malevolent nature. You will discover children being given magical gifts. You will find enchanted potions, magical spells and supernatural intervention. I chose the name of the book, based not only on one of the storys titles, but my strong belief in the spirit of romance.

Forged by War

In Forged By War, Australian veterans and their families reveal the experience of combat and how it has changed their lives. These stark first-hand accounts describe the reality of military action and its personal consequences in every major conflict and peacemaking mission since World War II, including the invasion of Iraq. Sometimes the reader is in lockstep with a soldier on patrol, watching as a land mine explodes, or a local militiaman points an AKandndash;47 at Australian peacemakers. Other times, the reader is inside a returned veteran's head, feeling their superfluous adrenalin, their need to control their environment, even at home. With accounts from Peter and Lynne Cosgrove, Graham Edwards, Frank Hunt (I Was Only Nineteen), other veterans of Vietnam, Glenda Humes (daughter of Capt Reginald Saunders), peacemakers and an SAS trooper, this compelling investigation by Gina Lennox in underpinned by the question: where does family fit in a soldier's life?

A dead child - sadistically murdered - his twin missing. A ring procuring children for the rich and powerful. A sinister organisation led by a shadowy figure known only as 'The Stoatmaster' whose cold tentacles seemingly stretch unendingly so that no place and no one is safe - not even the police. A Muslim detective, himself a twin, whose background renders others suspicious of him. His ruthless intelligence and tenacity converge to an obsession with finding the missing child and her brother's killer. His problem - he wants to leave the police. One last case can be a case too far when a child's face relentlessly haunts you - pulling you further into the abyss and your own family is in danger of disintegration. When depravity is licenced by money and everything, even a child, has a price, the only word left is 'evil'.
