This volume focuses on the connection between modern design and architectural practices and the construction of "sacred spaces." Not only language and ritual but space, place, and architecture play a significant role in constructing "special" or "religious" spaces. However, this concept of a constructed "sacred space" remains undertheorized in religious studies and the history of art and architecture in general. This volume therefore revisits the question of a "modern sacred space" from an interdisciplinary perspective, focusing on religion, space, and architecture during the emergence of the modern period and up until contemporary times. Revisiting the ways in which modern architects and artists have endeavored to create sacred spaces and buildings for the modern world will addresses the underlying questions of how religious ideas--especially those related to esotericism and to alternative religiosities--have transformed the way sacred spaces are conceptualized today.

Halcyon
The glistening white pillars of the Blue Star Memorial Temple lead to the federally recognized historic district of Halcyon, founded in 1903 as an intentionally formed community by the Temple of the People. This theosophical group came west from New York to establish a community dedicated to living the principles of unity and brotherhood on the coast of Central California. More than 100 years later, this community continues to thrive. The town was constructed on the principle of form follows function, and some of the homes from the early 1900s still shelter families. Currently, Halcyon covers 130 acres and has 60 buildings. These include the Halcyon Store and Halcyon Post Office, the temple, two meeting halls, and the W.Q. Judge Library. Growth has been limited, and Halcyon has always been protective of its open space, particularly the Builder's Grove Park in the center of town.

West Adams
By the turn of the 20th century, West Adams had become one of the first bedroom communities in fast-growing Los Angeles. Mansions and bungalows housed bankers and merchants who commuted to their businesses downtown, as well as moviemakers, debutantes, the social elite, and one or two scoundrels.
