Buster Keaton told an interviewer in 1965, "When I'm working alone, the cameraman, the prop man, the electrician, these are my eyes out there.... They knew what they were talking about." Drawn from film trade magazines, newspapers, interviews and public records, this book tells the previously unpublished stories of the behind-the-scenes crew who worked on Keaton's silent films--like Elgin Lessley, who went from department store clerk to chief cameraman, and Fred Gabourie, who served as an army private in the Spanish American War before he became Keaton's technical director. "I'd ask, 'Did that work the way I wanted it to?' and they'd say yes or no," Keaton said of his crew. He couldn't have made his films without them.

The general objective of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of the OCD Career Development Program. The specific objectives were to determine the program's impact on the local civil defense coordinator's knowledge of and ability to build and operate a viable local civil defense organization and to link the official (vertical) civil defense systems to the local community (horizontal) social systems. A portion of the data required to meaningfully evaluate a training program such as the Career Development Program was collected by a mail questionnaire which determined the perceptions of 128 local civil defense graduates of Career Development regarding changes in their knowledge, behavior, attitudes and degree of participation in civil defense related activities resulting from their attendance at the Career Development Program. The four impact areas--knowledge, behavior, attitudes and degree of participation--were utilized as the major criteria in assessing the degree to which Staff College is achieving the objectives established for the Career Development Program. A Year at Nethercombe Ley

Harry Simmonds is a reasonably successful businessman whose comfortable, contented suburban life is shattered when his wife leaves him for another man, and to satisfy her need for a career of her own. Lacking a steadying influence, Harry has sought solace in self-pity and alcohol. His daughter is at university, and his 18-year-old son, tired of bearing the brunt of his father's drunkenness and depression, has left home and fallen under the unsavoury influence of a school friend. Realising he is on a downward spiral, Harry takes the decision to make a dramatic change to his life. To give himself time and space to seek redemption and renewed purpose, he moves to a quiet Dorset village, where he is befriended by the local vicar, who coaxes him from his isolation into village life. During the course of a year, Harry embraces and adapts to a new and unfamiliar environment, and through new friendships and a growing appreciation of nature and the changing seasons, changes his outlook on life. The influence of three women helps him to regain his confidence and self respect and transforms not just his way of life, but his whole attitude to living.

Susan Taylor Chehak's compelling new novel, set once again in the heartland of America, pairs two unlikely friends in a dark tale of seduction and murder. It is May Caldwell's sixteenth summer, and life couldn't be more dull in Linwood, Iowa. Vaguely suicidal and haunted by half-remembered scenes from her early childhood, May is a girl waiting for her life to happen. And happen it does with the unexpected arrival of Frances Anne Crane, a.k.a. Frankie, a girl with too much past and nothing to lose. Together they seduce an older man as Frankie awakens all that May has been holding inside: the mystery of her uncle Brodie's illicit past, the painful truth of her grandparents' slow dissolutions, and her own emerging sexuality. Where Frankie leads, May follows, and what's left is a murder no one can pin, a family's buried past resurfaced in a wild night of mayhem, and May's safe world blown to smithereens in this unforgettable tale of betrayal and desire.
