Es sollte in besonderer Weise den Ort des DIJ auf dem Schnittpunkt zwischen area studies und den systematischen Wissenschaften beleuchten und zur Beantwortung der Frage beitragen, worin der spezifische Erkenntniswert der japanbezogenen Forschung für die Wissenschaft im allgemeinen liegen könnte.
Party Systems and Cleavage Structures in Southern Africa
The book examines the cleavage structures and the positioning of political parties in countries of Southern Africa including Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zambia. Each case compares the relevant cleavages according to the formulae set of Rae and Taylor with the policies of the competing political parties according to the Manifesto Research Group Wordscores analysis. The comparative perspective concludes with the definitions of Left, Right and Liberal in the context of the Southern Africa and shows determinant of party success and failure.

Members of Parliament in Western Europe
Traditional comparative studies of parliaments have focused on constitutional and organizational characteristics of parliaments, or differences in the historical contexts, in which legislative assemblies have developed. The motivations of individual Members of Parliament have been neglected. This volume provides empirical work on legislative role orientations and behaviour in six West European parliaments: Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and the United Kingdom. All contributions present a wealth of empirical findings on parliamentarians' role orientations in different institutional contexts.
Political Representation in France and Germany
Notwithstanding its contemporary critics, political representation remains at the core of democratic politics. Based on a comparative research project that gathered data from observations, surveys, experiments and expert interviews, this book examines the process and the quality of political representation in France and Germany from a dual perspective. First, it analyzes MPs’ behavior during their district activities. Second, it investigates the perceptions and evaluations of the represented, the French and German citizens. In ten chapters different facets of MPs’ activities as well as citizens’ attitudes are comparatively investigated. The book is relevant for Politics scholars and practitioners at national parliaments to better understand representative democracies, and it may also contribute to improve representation itself.
