The text is intended for the advanced student and the clinician who uses orthoses to treat mechanically induced pathology. The author and publisher have endeavored to make Recent Advances in Orthotic Therapy a step beyond what is currently being taught in the classroom, and create a compilation of documented and anecdotal evidence regarding orthotic decision-making. The text is a must for any practitioner who wishes to update their knowledge of the recent literature concerning orthotic therapy. The text is constructed in a manner to provide a logical approach to orthotic therapy, and therein establish the concept of pathology-specific orthotic therapy in the professions that prescribe orthoses for adults and children. It is believed that this text and its philosophy of pathology specific orthoses will improve clinical outcomes, lromote more consistent research, and faciltate the acceptance of orthotic therapy as a valued therapeutic modality.
Students of culture have been increasingly concerned with the ways in which cultural values are 'inscribed' on the body. These essays go beyond this passive construal of the body to a position in which embodiment is understood as the existential condition of cultural life. From this standpoint embodiment is reducible neither to representations of the body, to the body as an objectification of power, to the body as a physical entity or biological organism, nor to the body as an inalienable centre of individual consciousness. This more sensate and dynamic view is applied by the contributors to a variety of topics, including the expression of emotion, the experience of pain, ritual healing, dietary customs, and political violence. Their purpose is to contribute to a phenomenological theory of culture and self - an anthropology that is not merely about the body, but from the body.
The question of how well children recall and can discuss emotional experiences is one with numerous theoretical and applied implications. Theoretically, the role of emotions generally and emtional distress specifically in children's emerging cognitive abilities has implications for understanding how children attend to and process information, how children react to emotional information, and how that information affects their development and functioning over time. Practically speaking, increasing numbers of children have been involved in legal settings as victims or witnesses to violence, highlighting the need to determine the extent to which children's eyewitness reports of traumatic experiences are accurate and complete. In clinical contexts, the ability to narrate emotional events is emerging as a significant predictor of psychological outcomes. How children learn to describe emotional experiences and the extent to which they can do so coherently thus has important implications for clinical interventions.
