One of the most extraordinary characteristics of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection is its capacity to remain within the host's tissues for a long period of time. There is an enormous reservoir of persons latently infected with tuberculosis (LTBI) estimated at about a third of the world's population. From this reservoir arise about 10 million new cases of active TB and more than two million deaths occur annually. Current Diagnosis of Infant Tuberculosis Infection covers problems concerning the diagnosis of LTBI, giving an overview of commercially available options and, unlike most reviews on.
Mitochondria are multifunctional organelles that actively participate in the immune-inflammatory response in various pathologies. This volume updates readers on knowledge about mitochondria function. The editors have compiled six chapters about inflammation in its broadest sense, with contributions from active groups of cell biologists, infectologists and pathologists. The chapters in this volume focus on research related to five notable diseases: (1) two diseases (one bacterial and one viral) in which the exacerbation of the inflammatory response can lead to neuropathies: leprosy (one of the oldest diseases in the world) and Zika fever (a disease relatively new in Brazil) (2) three diseases...
Esta coletânea é especialmente voltada para os profissionais que trabalham na rede do SUS – e pode ser somada a uma proposta de educação a distância. Atlas presenting the results of aerial surveys undertaken to determine the principal wintering areas used by nearctic shorebirds on the coast of South America. The surveys, carried out in January/February from 1982-1986, covered 28,000 km of the South American coastline and included nearly all parts of the coast thought to contain significant habitat for shorebirds. Volume 1 contains an introduction, methods, an overview summarising the distribution of shorebirds on the coast on a continental level, discusses the shorebird distribution in relation to geomorphology and environmental conditions and reviews the need for international cooperation in the conservation of shorebirds, citing the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network as an example of a major conservation initiative that has arisen from internationally coordinated distributional studies. Volume 2 gives detailed information on shorebird distribution country by country. Data for each survey sector are summarized by size category on the maps.
