Blockchain technology presents numerous advantages that include increased transparency, reduced transaction costs, faster transaction settlement, automation of information, increased traceability, improved customer experience, improved digital identity, better cyber security, and user-controlled networks. These potential applications are widespread and diverse including funds transfer, smart contracts, e-voting, efficient supply chain, and more in nearly every sector of society including finance, healthcare, law, trade, real estate, and other important areas. However, there are challenges and limitations that exist such as high energy consumption, limited scalability, complexity, security, n...

Ordinary Differential Equations and Linear Algebra

Ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and linear algebra are foundational postcalculus mathematics courses in the sciences. The goal of this text is to help students master both subject areas in a one-semester course. Linear algebra is developed first, with an eye toward solving linear systems of ODEs. A computer algebra system is used for intermediate calculations (Gaussian elimination, complicated integrals, etc.); however, the text is not tailored toward a particular system. Ordinary Differential Equations and Linear Algebra: A Systems Approach systematically develops the linear algebra needed to solve systems of ODEs and includes over 15 distinct applications of the theory, many of which are not typically seen in a textbook at this level (e.g., lead poisoning, SIR models, digital filters). It emphasizes mathematical modeling and contains group projects at the end of each chapter that allow students to more fully explore the interaction between the modeling of a system, the solution of the model, and the resulting physical description.

Deep Learners and Deep Learner Descriptors for Medical Applications

This book introduces readers to the current trends in using deep learners and deep learner descriptors for medical applications. It reviews the recent literature and presents a variety of medical image and sound applications to illustrate the five major ways deep learners can be utilized: 1) by training a deep learner from scratch (chapters provide tips for handling imbalances and other problems with the medical data); 2) by implementing transfer learning from a pre-trained deep learner and extracting deep features for different CNN layers that can be fed into simpler classifiers, such as the support vector machine; 3) by fine-tuning one or more pre-trained deep learners on an unrelated data...

Measuring Distribution and Mobility of Income and Wealth

A collection of twenty-three studies that explore the latest developments in the analysis of income and wealth distribution and mobility. Economic research is increasingly focused on inequality in the distribution of personal resources and outcomes. One aspect of inequality is mobility: are individuals locked into their respective places in this distribution? To what extent do circumstances change, either over the lifecycle or across generations? Research not only measures inequality and mobility, but also analyzes the historical, economic, and social determinants of these outcomes and the effect of public policies. This volume explores the latest developments in the analysis of income and w...

Reactions of Market Entities to Crisis Situations

In the presented monograph selected important problems related to the perception of crisis situations are considered. These issues are important, as in recent years we have experienced numerous crisis situations in Poland. They have spread over the entire economy, affecting all entities within it. The importance of research on all crisis aspects is due to the fact that it disturbs the equilibrium state and negatively influences the level of safety of both people and the environment. That is why actions to minimize threats are important. These activities aim at the reconstruction of the environment, in the context of perceived economic and social relations, also with considerable support from various stakeholders.

NUMERICAL METHODS WITH C++ AND MATLAB PROGRAMMING, SECOND EDITION

The rapid development of high speed digital computers and the increasing desire for numerical answers to applied problems have led to increased demand in the courses dealing with the methods and techniques of numerical analysis. Numerical methods have always been useful but their role in the present-day scientific research has become prominent. For example, they enable one to find the roots of transcendental equations and in solving non-linear differential equations. Indeed, they give the solution when ordinary analytical methods fail. This well-organized and comprehensive text, now in its second edition, aims at enhancing and strengthening numerical methods concepts among students using C++...
