Advances in Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation

In recent years, research has demonstrated that exercise programs can benefit patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). Yet many physicians do not refer such patients to any kind of exercise or rehabilitation program. Advances in Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation examines the history of how pulmonary and cardiac diseases have been treated and shows how that history tends to constrain contemporary thinking in spite of significant advances in treatment. -Why do only a small percentage of eligible patients enroll in cardiopulmonary rehab programs? -What percentage of patients can be helped, and in what ways? -What are the most cost...

The Role of Protein and Amino Acids in Sustaining and Enhancing Performance

It is a commonly held belief that athletes, particularly body builders, have greater requirements for dietary protein than sedentary individuals. However, the evidence in support of this contention is controversial. This book is the latest in a series of publications designed to inform both civilian and military scientists and personnel about issues related to nutrition and military service. Among the many other stressors they experience, soldiers face unique nutritional demands during combat. Of particular concern is the role that dietary protein might play in controlling muscle mass and strength, response to injury and infection, and cognitive performance. The first part of the book contai...

Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid and is a major contributor to whole body nitrogen metabolism and is considered to be “conditionally essential.” Glutamine in Health and Disease presents the application of current nutritional knowledge by physicians and dietitians and incorporates emerging fields of science and important discoveries. Section 1 covers glutamine structure and function, glutamine synthetase, glutamine binding protein, glutamine transport, glutamine-rich activation domains and transcription, glutamine transaminase and cell biochemistry. Section 2 covers glucose-independent glutamine metabolism, intestinal barrier function, thyroid-stimulating hormone, glutamine reson...

Food and Nutritional Care in Hospitals

Disease-related undernutrition in hospitals is reaching significant levels in European countries, and there have been a number of national initiatives to address this problem. This report reviews current practice and seeks to highlight problems in service provision. It identifies five barriers to proper nutritional care in hospitals common throughout Europe and makes recommendations to promote good practice guidelines for nutritional care and support in hospitals. It is based on the findings of a study carried out by a group of experts on nutrition programmes in hospitals, on behalf of the the Committee of Experts on Nutrition, Food and Safety and Consumer Health.

Home Care Enteral Feeding

The poor nutritional status of the elderly living at home is a widespread problem. Many have energy and nutrient intakes below international standards. Almost one in five community-dwelling older adults lives on less than 1,000 kcal/day. The causes are dependent on sociological, psychological, and physiological factors. Significant reductions in energy intake accompany medical illness, and thus a causal connection between the role of proinflammatory cytokines and illness-induced undernutrition has been alleged. This challenge has now been addressed and analyzed by an international panel of leading experts at the 10th Nestl Nutrition Workshop in Berlin. Their work has brought the epidemiology, pathophysiology and the role of cytokines and immunomodulation in the management of undernutrition to the center of scholar attention. This book is a synthesis of state-of-the-art knowledge and expertise in this field of research and will be of high value for all medical and healthcare professionals who wish to gain insight into the complex interactions between nutrient intake and health.

Hepatic Encephalopathy in Chronic Liver Failure

The meeting which took place in Rome on November 19th and 20th of 1982 is easily the best meeting on hepatic coma that I have ever attended, and I have attended many. It was an exceedingly we- planned meeting with prolonged opportunity for discussion, and there was genuine interplay and exchange of ideas (not the usual picture of a rushed meeting with investigators presenting their own point of view and talking past each other without a meaningful ex change) which took place in Rome. My co-editors and I hope that the published transcript, which of course can only reflect what transpired in Rome on those two days, does justice to a very intellectually exciting and gratifying ex change of idea...
