Security and authentication issues are surging to the forefront of the research realm in global society. As technology continues to evolve, individuals are finding it easier to infiltrate various forums and facilities where they can illegally obtain information and access. By implementing biometric authentications to these forums, users are able to prevent attacks on their privacy and security. Biometrics: Concepts, Methodologies, Tools, and Applications is a multi-volume publication highlighting critical topics related to access control, user identification, and surveillance technologies. Featuring emergent research on the issues and challenges in security and privacy, various forms of user authentication, biometric applications to image processing and computer vision, and security applications within the field, this publication is an ideal reference source for researchers, engineers, technology developers, students, and security specialists.
This book covers the different aspects of modern 3D multimedia technologies by addressing several elements of 3D visual communications systems, using diverse content formats, such as stereo video, video-plus-depth and multiview, and coding schemes for delivery over networks. It also presents the latest advances and research results in regards to objective and subjective quality evaluation of 3D visual content, extending the human factors affecting the perception of quality to emotional states. The contributors describe technological developments in 3D visual communications, with particular emphasis on state-of-the-art advances in acquisition of 3D visual scenes and emerging 3D visual represe...

This book contains high-quality and original research on computational intelligence for green smart cities research. In recent years, the use of smart city technology has rapidly increased through the successful development and deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) architectures. The citizens' quality of life has been improved in several sensitive areas of the city, such as transportation, buildings, health care, education, environment, and security, thanks to these technological advances Computational intelligence techniques and algorithms enable a computational analysis of enormous data sets to reveal patterns that recur. This information is used to inform and improve decision-making at t...
This book describes and analyzes in detail the encoding effort and the encoding tool usage applied to 3D-HEVC depth map coding. Based on the analyzed information, the authors introduce efficient algorithms for accelerating the available encoding tools. The contributions discussed in this book include four algorithms for reducing intra-frame encoding effort and three algorithms for reducing inter-frame encoding effort. The presented results demonstrate several levels of encoding effort reduction with different impacts in the encoding efficiency, surpassing state-of-the-art solutions by more than 50% the encoding effort with only 0.3% encoding efficiency loss.
In this volume, written by engineers at the centre of the development of the industry, will be found a comprehensive survey of the wide range of applications encompassed by the term 'Multimedia Telecommunications'. From broadcast television to the specifics of data communications, from entertainment to decision-making, from the human interface to the details of the technology, all are essential facets of the subjects and are treated in this volume. For all users and providers of any form of multimedia service, researchers, development engineers, computer providers or users, IT and Information System managers, change managers in business or in the entertainment industry,Multimedia Telecommunications is essential reading.
Like their Hollywood counterparts, Latin American film and TV melodramas have always been popular and highly profitable. The first of its kind, this anthology engages in a serious study of the aesthetics and cultural implications of Latin American melodramas. Written by some of the major figures in Latin American film scholarship, the studies range across seventy years of movies and television within a transnational context, focusing specifically on the period known as the "Golden Age" of melodrama, the impact of classic melodrama on later forms, and more contemporary forms of melodrama. An introductory essay examines current critical and theoretical debates on melodrama and places the essays within the context of Latin American film and media scholarship. Contributors are Luisela Alvaray, Mariana Baltar, Catherine L. Benamou, Marvin D’Lugo, Paula Félix-Didier, Andrés Levinson, Gilberto Perez, Darlene J. Sadlier, Cid Vasconcelos, and Ismail Xavier.
3G 2004 was the premier technical forum for 3G mobile and related technologies, in it's fifth successful year. The conference brought together researchers and technologists from manufacturers, service providers, operators, application developers, regulators and standards bodies to share the latest information and promote the development of 3G services, systems and networks.
This book displays the striking creativity and profound insight that characterized Freire's work to the very end of his life-an uplifting and provocative exploration not only for educators, but also for all that learn and live.
