This book critically addresses concepts and analyses related to the higher education and development nexus in Africa. The study explores the expansion of higher education in Africa and its impact on development, modernization and the economy to situate Africa within global debates on higher education governance and investment. Using concrete indicators from economic, social and political domains, the book demystifies dominant narratives which giant institutions have applied to disunite the relationship between universities and growth on the continent.
American Higher Education in a Global Context: Historical Perspectives describes the current state of universities on each continent, providing a comprehensive analysis of the numerous factors that have affected higher education systems around the world. This book studies higher education from its emergence in antiquity to the establishment of the American research university model and its adoption around the globe, through the current Covid-19 pandemic and concomitant economic and political crisis. The author pays special attention to the shortcomings of the neoliberal trend of the last four decades, which increased social stratification at institutions of higher learning. Calling for an expansion of access to tertiary education, and in particular, to research universities, this book examines the competition between China and the United States in the field of higher education, stressing the importance of academic freedom, without which there can be no true academic excellence.

Partindo desta constatação, investiga-se como as despesas públicas realizadas pelo Estado são capazes de atuar na redução das desigualdades e no combate à pobreza, exercen...

Furthermore, the study will facilitate an informed debate and the dissemination of knowledge on the role of higher education for development in Africa.
Discusses higher education in Mozambique, especially in the context of the dramatic changes the country has undergone. The Partnership for Higher Education in Africa commissioned case studies of higher education provision in Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa, as part of its effort to stimulate enlightened, equitable, and knowledge-based national development, and to provide guides to understanding. Mozambique suffers from a critical shortage of qualified professionals, as well as from acute regional disparities in wealth, development and trained human resources. Higher education is in great flux. A high priority, governmental and other sources are involved in a contested debate that provides a scenario for innovation and diversity.
