Peer Gynt (Dodo Press)
Henrik Johan Ibsen (1828-1906) was a major Norwegian playwright largely responsible for the rise of modern realistic drama. He is often referred to as the "father of modern drama." His plays were considered scandalous to many of his era. His work examined the realities that lay behind many facades, possessing a revelatory nature that was disquieting to many contemporaries. His first play, the tragedy Catilina (1850), was published under the pseudonym Brynjulf Bjarme, when he was only 22, but it was not performed. His play Brand (1865), was to bring him the critical acclaim he sought, along with a measure of financial success, as was his next play, Peer Gynt (1867). With success, Ibsen became more confident and began to introduce more and more his own beliefs and judgments into the drama, exploring what he termed the "drama of ideas." His other notable works include Love's Comedy (1862), A Doll's House (1879), Ghosts (1881), An Enemy of the People (1882), The Wild Duck (1884), Hedda Gabler (1890) and When We Dead Awaken (1899).

Cosmopolitanism and Transatlantic Circles in Music and Literature
Cosmopolitanism and Transatlantic Circles in Music and Literature traces the transatlantic networks that were constructed between a select group of composers, including Edvard Grieg, Edward MacDowell, and Percy Grainger, and the writers with whom they shared cosmopolitan affinities, including Arne Garborg, Hamlin Garland, Madison Grant, and Lathrop Stoddard. Each overlapping case study surveys the diachronic transmission of cosmopolitanism as well as the synchronic practices that animated these modernist ideas. Instead of taking a strictly chronological approach to organization, each chapter offers an examination of the different layers of identity that expanded and contracted in relation to a mutual interest in Nordic culture. From the burgeoning “universal” ambitions around 1900 to the darker racialized discourse of the 1920s, this study offers a critical analysis of both the idea and practice of cosmopolitanism in order to expose its common foundations as well as the limits of its application.
The Uncanny in Language, Literature and Culture
In his attempts to define the uncanny, Sigmund Freud asserted that the concept is undoubtedly related to what is frightening, to what arouses dread and horror. Yet the sensation is prompted, simultaneously, by something familiar, establishing a sense of insecurity within the domestic, even within the walls of one’s own home. This disturbance of the familiar further unsettles the sense of oneself. A resultant perturbed relationship between a person and their familiar world — the troubled sense of home and self-certainty — can be the result of a traumatic experience of loss, and of unresolved pasts resurfacing in the present. Memory traces are revised and interwoven with fresh experiences producing an uncanny effect. As “an externalization of consciousness”, the uncanny becomes a meta-concept for modernity with its disintegration of time, space, and self. The papers in this book seek to explore the representations of the uncanny in language, literature, and culture, applying the origins of the concept to a range of ideas and works.
