This special issue of the Bulletin of the John Rylands Library is dedicated to Peter Nockles. An expert on the Oxford Movement and the religious history of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Nockles was employed at the John Rylands Library from 1979 to 2016. During this time he extended his scholarly generosity and friendship to countless researchers. The issue features articles on a range of topics connected to Peter's scholarship and networks, including the Church of England (particularly High Churchmanship and the Oxford Movement), Catholicism, Methodism and Church-State conflict relating to the Church of Ireland.
This book offers a radical reassessment of the significance of the Oxford Movement and of its leaders, Newman, Keble, and Pusey, by setting them in the context of the Anglican High Church tradition of the preceding 70 years. Lay Activism and the High Church Movement of the Late Eighteenth Century: The Life and Thought of William Stevens, 1732-1807, by Robert M. Andrews, is the first full-length study of Stevens’ life and thought. Historiographically revisionist and contextualised within a neglected history of lay High Church activism, Andrews presents Stevens as an influential High Church layman who brought to Anglicanism not only his piety and theological learning, but his wealth and business acumen. With extensive social links to numerous High Church figures in late Georgian Britain, Stevens’ lay activism is shown to be central to the achievements and effectiveness of the wider High Church movement during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
This book focuses on Anglican Confirmation in theology, liturgy, and practice from 1820 to 1945. This was a period of great change in the ways Anglicans approached Confirmation. The Tractarian movement transformed the Communion, and its ideas were carried overseas with the missionary movement. The study examines the development of a two-stage theology and its reception. It analyses the wave of liturgical revision expressed in England in the 1928 Prayer Book. It explores the episcopal changes in practice from the eighteenth-century paradigm to a new way of confirming. The revolution of the time has left a legacy that still informs practice, while doubts about theology and its liturgical application have left an existential crisis. The author reflects on how the current situation in various provinces has its roots in this period and the diffusion of ideas in the Communion. The book offers a fresh systematic examination of the neglected ecclesial practice of Confirmation, providing a more holistic view and clarifying developments to help us better understand the present. It will be of particular interest to scholars of Christian theology, liturgy, ecclesiology, and church history.

A Eucharist-shaped Church: Prayer, Theology, Mission is a historical-theological survey of major movements and thinkers that have shaped sacramental theology and liturgical worship within the Anglican/Episcopal tradition. The contributors attend closely to the interplay between Christian thinking, praying, and living in order to distil lessons for liturgical revision and worship renewal. Each chapter explores a major thinker or movement, and explores how the theological, liturgical, ecclesiological, and missiological commitments of the thinker or movement interacted and shaped the thinker’s or movement’s overall thought. This serves a two-fold purpose: 1.) Much scholarship about Anglican eucharistic theology treats some aspect of that theology in isolation (presence, sacrifice, etc.) from other aspects, and from the context in which the theology was developed. This approach shows how these various aspects and contexts in fact have mutual explanatory power. 2.) The interaction of these various aspects of eucharistic theology provide a framework for those involved in liturgical revision to think through the commitments communicated by the proposed revisions.
Sara Coleridge and the Oxford Movement is the first book to be devoted entirely to Sara Coleridge’s religious writings. It presents extracts from important religious works which have remained unpublished since the 1840s. These writings represent a bold intervention by a woman writer in the public spheres of academia and the Church, in the genre of religious writing which was a masculine preserve (as opposed to the genres of religious fiction and poetry). They offer the most original and systematic critique of Tractarian theology to appear in the 1840s. Sara Coleridge’s assertion of religious inclusivity and liberty of conscience is based on a radically Protestant theology underpinned by a Kantian epistemology. The book also presents substantial extracts from her unpublished masterpiece Dialogues on Regeneration (the equivalent of her father’s Opus Maximum) which show her remarkable literary originality and the continuing development of her innovative religious thought.
