Autobiography, Swiss Molecular Biologist, Animal Science, DNA Fingerprinting Professor Urs Kuhnlein is an accomplished molecular biologist, a celebrated mountaineer and nature lover, and a devoted member of an extended family that stretches from Switzerland to Canada and the United States. He graduated from the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich (ETH) and the University of Geneva in Switzerland and excelled academically, eventually becoming Emeritus Professor at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. In this volume, he vividly recalls his summit experiences from the first on the Bietschhorn in the Canton of Wallis to Denali in Alaska. His colleagues, students, friends, family, and like-minded adventurers will recognize his keen interests in and rich insights into the diverse worlds captured in this memoir. Urs now lives on Fidalgo Island in the San Juans of Washington State.

How and why is silence used interculturally? Approaching the phenomenon of silence from multiple perspectives, this book shows how silence is used, perceived and at times misinterpreted in intercultural communication. Using a model of key aspects of silence in communication linguistic, cognitive and sociopsychological and fundamental levels of social organization individual, situational and sociocultural - the book explores the intricate relationship between perceptions and performance of silence in interaction involving Japanese and Australian participants. Through a combination of macro- and micro- ethnographic analyses of university seminar interactions, the stereotypes of the 'silent East' is reconsidered, and the tension between local and sociocultural perspectives of intercultural communication is addressed. The book has relevance to researchers and students in intercultural pragmatics, discourse analysis and applied linguistics.

The history of English writing is, to a considerable extent, the history of instructional writing in English. This book sheds new light on Appositive Relative Clauses (ARCs), a structure that is generally studied from a merely syntactic point of view, in opposition to Determinative (or Restrictive) Relative Clauses (DRCs). In this volume, ARCs are examined from a discourse/pragmatic point of view, independently of DRCs, in order to provide a positive definition of the structure. After a presentation of the morphosyntactic, semantic and pragmatic characteristics of ARCs, a taxonomy of their functions in discourse is established for both written and spoken English based on the results of a corpus-based investigation. Constraints are then defined within an information-packaging approach to syntactic structures to show why speakers choose ARCs over other competing allostructures, i.e. syntactic structures that fulfil similar discourse functions (e.g. nominal appositives, independent clauses, adverbials, noun premodifiers, topicalization). The end result is a deeper understanding of the richness of ARCs in their natural contexts of use.
