The fabled land of Nubia, whose very name means 'gold, ' was famous in ancient times for its supplies of precious metal, exotic material, and intricate craftsmanship. Many of the adornments made in Nubia are masterpieces of the jeweler's art--marvels of design and construction rivaling, and often surpassing, adornments made in Egypt and the rest of the ancient Mediterranean world. Although these unique treasures are among the most stunning to have survived from antiquity, they remain little known. Richly illustrated with beautiful photographs of these exquisite items, many of them never before published, Nubian Gold also places the jewelry within the cultural contexts in which it was manufac...

Comparing other sites along the Nile with Tell el-Amarna, which is generally accepted as the paradigm for Egyptian urban settlements, the assistant curator for ancient Egyptian, Nubian, and Near Eastern Art at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston finds a mental template of urban structure in ancient Egypt. He compares both the overall community layout and forms of individual structures such as palaces, administration buildings, workers' villagers, and houses. Double spaced. Illustrated with line drawings. No index. Distributed in the US by Kegan. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Ancient Nubia

A lushly illustrated gazetteer of the archaeological sites of southern Egypt and northern Sudan and named a 2012 American Publishers (PROSE) Awards winner for Best Archaeology & Anthropology Book For most of the modern world, ancient Nubia seems an unknown and enigmatic land. Only a handful of archaeologists have studied its history or unearthed the Nubian cities, temples, and cemeteries that once dotted the landscape of southern Egypt and northern Sudan. Nubia’s remote setting in the midst of an inhospitable desert, with access by river blocked by impassable rapids, has lent it not only an air of mystery, but also isolated it from exploration. Over the past century, particularly during this last generation, scholars have begun to focus more attention on the fascinating cultures of ancient Nubia, ironically prompted by the construction of large dams that have flooded vast tracts of the ancient land. This book attempts to document some of what has recently been discovered about ancient Nubia, with its remarkable history, architecture, and culture, and thereby to give us a picture of this rich, but unfamiliar, African legacy.

"The Thalassic Collection, Ltd., is one of the world's greatest private collections of Egyptian art, consisting of over 175 rare and beautiful objects ranging in date from 3500 B.C. to the Roman era in the first century A.D. These relics of Pharaonic civilization are illustrated here, along with contributions from over 20 scholars on Egyptomania, Egyptian art and history, and materials and techniques in Egyptian art. The collection is particularly rich in important sculptures, both significant historical monuments as well as artistic masterpieces. Also included are a large number of small items including jewels and amulets, inlays and architectural decorations, and painstakingly crafted objects of everyday use. Lastly, the collection also documents the development of Egyptology in the 18th and 19th centuries through outstanding examples of Egyptomania, including the evocative paintings of Gerome, David Roberts, and Howard Carter."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Artwashing the Past

Artwashing the Past: Context Matters contributes to the wider discussion about the appropriate due diligence process that should be conducted prior to the acquisition of cultural objects. The chapters were written as museums in Europe and North America were facing a series of claims on recently acquired objects in their collections in the light of the photographic dossiers that had been seized from dealers in Switzerland and Greece. They engage with some of the recent debates over cultural property that include the Ka Ka Nefer mummy mask currently in the St Louis Art Museum, and the Leutwitz Apollo acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Two of the essays reflect on the recent and controversial metal-detecting finds in England, the so-called Crosby Garrett helmet and the Lenborough Hoard.

This book introduces the reader to the collecting activities of a late 19th-early 20th century Bostonian couple with a passion for ancient Egypt. The collectors, Laura and Kingsmill Marrs, were guided in their acquisitions by Howard Carter, an archaeologist who would later achieve world-wide recognition for his discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun (1922). Under his guidance, the Marrs' purchased an outstanding selection of scarabs, amulets, jewelry, and cosmetic-related articles, including rare blue-toned stone vessels. They also acquired a group of Carter's watercolor renditions of important Egyptian sites and royal figures. These artifacts, as well as objects from Worcester's stellar collection of Egyptian antiquities, will be included in the publication. The publication will also include several essays on the Marrs', the amulets and jewelry that form their collection, and the extensive analyses and conservation recently afforded the material.
