Discipleship - Bible Study

Every Christian is called to be a disciple, but do we realise this? And what does it mean? This book guides us through the essential topic of discipleship. Peter Maiden, after a lifetime of discipleship, shows from his own struggles and experiences that the life of discipleship is a life of relationship - a love between us and Jesus. We are called to servanthood, to being wise in the use of time and money. Then there are things we can do by ourselves: the spiritual disciplines of prayer, Bible study, fasting; and things we can do to help each other, as church communities. Finally, he looks at what it is all for - mission. All who is all for - Jesus.

Building on the Rock

How should we define our identity, as Christians? And how do we actually define ourselves, usually? In this short but powerful book, Peter Maiden (former International leader for OM) shows how we must find our identity in Christ if we are to have any stability. So many Christians struggle because they find their identity and self worth in things which are ultimately unworthy and utterly unstable. Or they find it in fleeting and vulnerable places - leadership positions, professions and achievements. Even family roles change, and mutate. As the people of God our identity is not to be found in our achievements, appearance, career or even our family. But our place in Christ is eternal, unshakeable. We are sons and daughters of God welcomed into his family through grace, which has been sealed by an eternal covenant. Anything less than this can only lead to disappointment, disillusionment, legalism and even the abuse of others, as we relentlessly seek to prove and assert ourselves rather than relaxing in the security and certainty of family.

Radical Gratitude

As Christians we should be the most grateful people alive. After all, doesn't the Bible encourage thankfulness and condemn grumbling? Peter Maiden traces the theme of thanksgiving in Scripture, and shows how we can genuinely live counter-cultural lives even in an age of rampant entitlement.

With a pastoral heart, he explains how gratitude is the key to joyful, consistent Christian living, discipleship and mission involvement. He focuses on: · how we can develop the habit of thanksgiving · the benefits of gratitude · how we can be grateful, even in hard times Each chapter unpacks biblical truth and grounds it with practical application and personal illustrations. A series of short Bible study questions and reflections (mostly on the Psalms) conclude the chapters. As he was writing this book, poignantly and to his great shock, the author learned that he was suffering from incurable cancer. Far from derailing his message, this unwelcome news energised his efforts as he poured out his vision on the page with his now-limited resources. This is authenticity at its best. This book will be the author's last.
