Peter Price has been called to the house of old pawnbroker Justus Compton by his relatives, but arrives just after he passes away. They immediately claim that he had been murdered by his much younger wife Silva and her cousin Frank Cloud, and the post mortem confirms that he has been killed by morphine overdose as well as poison administration. Despite it appearing to be a clear cut case, the detective suspects all is not what it seems, and launches his own investigation. that brings up fencing operations, forgery, and revenge.
