Haunted Fetchley

From the archive of the late Bertram Thorne comes the first collection of ghostly tales from Haunted Fetchley. Thorne, a former teacher and amateur paranormal investigator, dies before he is able to publish five decades' worth of paranormal goings-on recorded in Fetchley and surrounding areas. Peter Ravenscroft, struggling teacher and former journalist, is bequeathed Bertram's library of terrifying supernatural encounters. This volume contains the spine-chilling 'The Freshers' Phantom', in which a group of naive students get more than they bargained for after tampering with forces from beyond the grave. Also included in this anthology: 'Who's Been Sleeping In My Bed?' - a tale to put the wind up any would-be bargain hunter; 'I Don't Think So' - in which a phone call from a former colleague leads Bertram Thorne to his first encounter with the supernatural; 'The Woman In The Red Shoes' - in which a restaurant owner and his staff find that fear is on the menu; and 'When Maurice Came Home' - in which a grieving widow is given one last chance to say farewell to her late husband. Fetchley - where the dead do not rest in peace.

A Good Death

A Good Death is a candid and provocative account of the experiences of many terminally ill people Dr Rodney Syme has assisted to end their lives. Over the past thirty years Syme has challenged the law on voluntary euthanasia—at first clandestinely and now publicly—risking prosecution in doing so. He again risks prosecution for writing this book. A Good Death is a moving journey with those who came to Syme for help, and a meditation on what it means in our culture to confront death. It is also a doctor's personal story about the moral dilemmas and ethical choices he faces working within the grey areas of the law. In this important book, Rodney Syme argues for the end of the unofficial 'conspiracy' of silence within the medical profession and the decriminalisation of voluntary euthanasia in Australia. Through Syme's determination to tell the stories of those who he has assisted to die with dignity, A Good Death also draws wider lessons of value for those who find themselves in a similar situation.

Surgical Palliative Care describes the principles and practice of surgery in the context of palliative and supportive care. Surgery is often considered too invasive to be useful in palliation and clinicians instinctively turn to radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and other drugs. Surgery, withincreasingly minimal access techniques, may be simpler and less invasive than other treatments and produces excellent palliation. Indeed, most types of surgery are not curative and the aim of this book is to alert all concerned with palliative care to the usefulness and appropriateness of a surgicaloption. The text is divided into two sections; the first dealing with general issues, varying from quality of life measurement to spirituality, and the second illustrating their application in different specialties of surgery ranging from neurosurgery to urology. The book ends with a challenge to surgeonsto change their perspective from curative surgery, in terms of simply cure or failure, to improvement in quality of life and relief of symptoms. Aimed primarily at palliative medicine and pain consultants, this book will also appeal to surgeons who increasingly need to know more about palliativecare.
