Production-Comprehension Asymmetries in Child Language
The workshop Production-Comprehension Asymmetries in Child Language held in Osnabrück in 2009 is the starting point for this book. The workshop developed from the observation that children's production skills appear to precede their comprehension skills in a number of phenomena, e.g. pronouns or negation. The volume provides cross-linguistic evidence for such asymmetric development and investigates grammatical and methodical explanations of the observed asymmetries.
Explorations in Second Language Acquisition and Processing
This book presents cutting-edge research on the nature of grammatical systems developed by bilinguals and second language learners, as well as how speakers put these grammatical systems to use in processing language. The chapters provide a stimulating mix of theoretical contributions and experimental designs addressing a variety of research questions, such as learnability and access to Universal Grammar, native language influence, variability, and what propels language development from one stage to the next. Bilingual development is a special highlight here. The linguistic domains investigated are also extremely diverse, and include morphology, syntax, and language processing, as well as the interfaces between syntax and semantics and between syntax and discourse. The book covers the acquisition of an impressive number of languages including Arabic, Croatian, Chinese, English, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish as first or second languages. Through these diverse contributions, the reader will be able to identify and follow important new directions in which generative language acquisition is developing and expanding.
Language Acquisition and Development
This edited collection contains 34 papers originally presented at the Generative Approaches to Language Acquisition (GALA) conference in 2013, held in Oldenburg, Germany. It represents theoretically guided, high quality work, and provides impressive insights into state-of-the-art research in the fields of first and second language acquisition and developmental impairments. The studies brought together here cover a wide variety of different (mainly European) languages, focusing on the areas of phonology, morpho-syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and their interfaces. Since their first publication, the proceedings of GALA have become an invaluable reference for cutting-edge research in First and Second Language Acquisition and its impairments – and this volume continues that tradition.

Logic, Language and Meaning
The FoLLI LNAI subline aims to disseminate cutting-edge results in logic, language and information (LLI) research, development and education. LLI is the topical focus of FoLLI, the Association of Logic, Language and Information (www.folli.org). FoLLI was founded in 1991 to advance research and education on the interface between logic, linguistics, computer science and cognitive science and related disciplines. Cross-fertilization between these areas has frequently led to significant progress on challenging research problems. Consequently, titles in the FoLLI LNAI series are targeted at researchers in multiple disciplines. As one of its major international activities, FoLLI organizes each year the European Summer School for Logic, Language and Information (ESSLLI). In parallel to the printed book, each new volume is published electronically in LNCS/LNAI Online.
Models of Reference
To communicate, speakers need to make it clear what they are talking about. Referring expressions play a crucial part in achieving this, by anchoring utterances to things. Examples of referring expressions include noun phrases such as “this phenomenon”, “it” and “the phenomenon to which this Topic is devoted”. Reference is studied throughout the Cognitive Sciences (from philosophy and logic to neuro-psychology, computer science and linguistics), because it is thought to lie at the core of all of communication. Recent years have seen a new wave of work on models of referring, as witnessed by a number of recent research projects, books, and journal Special Issues. The Research Topic “Models of Reference” in Frontiers in Psychology is a new milestone, focusing on contributions from Psycholinguistics and Computational Linguistics. The articles in it are concerned with such issues as audience design, overspecification, visual perception, and variation between speakers.
The Syntax of Silence
A primary goal of contemporary theoretical linguistics is to develop a theory of the correspondence between sound (or gesture) and meaning. This sound-meaning correspondence breaks down completely in the case of ellipsis, and yet various forms of ellipsis are pervasive in natural language: words and phrases which should be in the linguistic signal go missing. How this should be possible is the focus of Jason Merchant's investigation. He focuses on the form of ellipsis known as sluicing, a common feature of interrogative clauses, such as in Sally's out hunting - guess what ; and Someone called, but I can't tell you who. It is the most frequently found cross-linguistic form of ellipsis. Dr Merchant studies the phenomenon across 24 languages, and attempts to explain it in linguistic and behavioural terms.
Logic, Language, Information, and Computation
Edited in collaboration with FoLLI, the Association of Logic, Language and Information this book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 26th Workshop on Logic, Language, Information and Communication, WoLLIC 2019, held in Utrecht, The Netherlands, in July 2019. The 41 full papers together with 6 invited lectures presented were fully reviewed and selected from 60 submissions. The idea is to have a forum which is large enough in the number of possible interactions between logic and the sciences related to information and computation, and yet is small enough to allow for concrete and useful interaction among participants.
