In recent years there has been an increasing interest in quantitative analysis of coronary cineangiograms and already for a longer time of left ventricular cin eangiograms. The needfor quantitationofcoronary arterialdimensions has been stimulated by the introduction ofnew therapeutic procedures in the catheteriza tionlaboratory, suchas the balloon dilatationtechnique (PTCA) and thromboly tic therapy, by the need to study the vasoactive responses of pharmaceutical agents, and also by the desire to study the progressive nature ofcoronary artery disease with the ultimate goal to find ways to bring a halt to the progression of coronary atherosclerosis or even achieve regression of the disease. P...
This book contains the manuscripts of the majority of the papers given during the symposium 'Improvement of Myocardial Perfusion' which was held from Sep tember 27-29,1984 in Mainz/Germany. It has been the purpose of this meeting to focus the interest of scientifically and clinically interested cardiologists on the new developments in this field. We therefore chose the subtitle 'Medical-Mechanical -Surgical Approach'. The medical improvements in myocardial perfusion have been brought about by the application of streptokinase, urokinase and tissue-type plasminogen ac tivator in the first hours after the onset of an acute myocardial infarction. The different modes of application and the possib...
As little as 30 years ago, cardiovascular research at Bayer was just a small sideline with in an environment dominated by chemotherapy research, and only 15 years ago, Bayer's pharmaceutical business was confined to European and Latin Ameri can countries, with sales in cardiovascular pharmaceuticals close to zero. It goes without saying that Adalat has changed the company as a whole in its research, development, and marketing, both in Germany and, most importantly, world wide. In research and development, Adalat has led the way in to new areas such as hypertension, acute neurology, dementia, atherosclerosis, and heart failure. In pharmacology, Adalat was present at the dawning of the second ...
The detection of ischemic myocardium is one of the major problems in modern cardiology. Exercise has long been used to detect latent myocardial ischemia by enhancing oxygen de mand, but different cardiologists perform exercise tests in dif ferent ways. In addition, many new techniques for detection of ischemia have been developed in the past decade. For these reasons, a symposium on this topic was organized in Dusseldorf under the auspices of the European Society of Cardiology. The papers from this symposium contained herein provide an up-to-date review of the different forms of exercise tests, including their advantages and disadvantages. Indications for study, recording techniques and eval...
Following remarkable advances in medical care. the past decade has witnessed a significant improvement in the survival of patients with many different forms of heart disease. In the majority ofcases. however. the advances have been pa lIiative and not curative. The resu It has been the prod uction of an ever-increasing population of patients with heart disease. many of whom suffer from myocardial dysfunction and latent or overt heart failure. Heart failure is now a major cause of morbidity and mortality in cardiac patients. This book aims to combine in a single volume data relating to both pathophysiological mechanisms and the clinical management of the patient with heart failure. It include...
First multi-year cumulation covers six years: 1965-70.
The anesthetist-computer interface tends to be a problem for the utilization of computer systems for anesthesia. Ergonomic interface design with an emphasis on the coherency of the interface's static and dynamic structure may improve this situation. To investigate this proposition we developed an Anesthesia Information System (AIS) with a touch-sensitive monitor as the hardware-user interface. Basic data input and system control techniques were defined and implemented. Record keeping is integrated into the user interface. Ventilator control from the same interface is an additional feature for laboratory simulations. The system is being evaluated using a technique that simulates live operatio...
