Scottish Trade in the Wake of Union (1700-1760)
The monograph examines the trends, structure and fluctuations in Scotland's foreign trade, 1700-1760 in two parts. Part I is a general examination of the sources, the institutional, as well as socio-economic framework, and the general trend in Scotland's foreign trades, 1700-1760. Part II consists of a detailed case study on Scottish trade with German ports, based on a comprehensive examination of contemporary customs accounts and trade statistics. The monograph's main aim is to highlight the pan-European contingency matrix, which Scottish foreign trade was exposed to after 1700. It is also intended to shed new light on hitherto overlooked aspects, such as the responsibility of the new (English) customs system in Scotland, 1707 for creating a peculiarly Scottish pattern of trade thereafter.
Freedom and Capitalism in Early Modern Europe
This book hinges upon ideas and discourses variously known under labels such as “Mercantilism” and “Cameralism”. Often viewed as antithesis of capitalism, inclusive institutions and good economy in the “West”, this book re-assembles them and builds them into a coherent origin story of modern capitalism. It explores the field of intellectual and conceptual history, especially the history of Renaissance and Mercantilism in a longer history of capitalism. Rather than hindrances, the author argues that Mercantilist and Cameralist political economies presented essential stepping stones of modern capitalism, in Britain and beyond. Scottish Trade with German Ports, 1700-1770
The monograph contributes to the field of eighteenth-century comparative European history. Based mainly on British and German customs accounts, it is a bilateral case study of the basic working mechanisms within a much larger framework - the eighteenth-century Atlantic economy. The Scottish customs records are unique, insofar as they allow precise reconstructions of Scotland's trade volume in yearly series after 1743, which can be broken down by singular countries/commodities. As the Scottish-German trade pattern linked back into the Atlantic framework, it is hoped that the present model study will encourage further research into cross-country studies of North Sea and Atlantic trade - the most dynamic branch of European commerce post-1700.

This volume presents Martin Luther’s contribution to the modern economic sciences, providing a detailed introduction and revised translation of his major pamphlet on economic matters, ‘On Commerce and Usury’ (‘Von Kauffshandlung und Wucher’, 1524). In his teachings on indulgences, Luther picked up on the question of hoarding money, and was among the earliest voices in early modern Europe calling for an ‘ethical’ economics. Luther‘s work prefigured many later contributions to modern economic theory, from the mercantilists and cameralists to the German Historical School.
The Rise of the Atlantic Economy and the North Sea/Baltic Trade, 1500-1800
These conference proceedings from the XVth World Economic History Congress discuss the economic relationship between the Atlantic World and the North Sea/Baltic region in the pre-industrial period. Yet, the relationship is not seen only in terms of commodity and capital flows. Different patterns of trade and political economies of early modern states come into focus, too. The individual contributions pay attention to institutional conditions of trade, as well as cross-cultural entrepreneurship. The role of Atlantic colonial commodities for the transformation of the Baltic and North Sea trades is examined. Economic policies are stressed as crucial for a more thorough understanding of such phenomena as the shift of Scotland's trade from the east to the west, and for the success of Danish and Swedish shipping businesses during the period. In this way the editors hope that the volume will act as a trigger for further studies on a topic that has been hitherto neglected vis-�-vis an ever-growing body of literature on the early modern Atlantic economies: An impartial and comprehensive understanding of the Atlantic can only be achieved by factoring the Baltic into the picture.
