Hero and Deity

Hero and Deity is an eloquent and fascinating journey into the world of the worshippers and the cult of Tran Hung Dao. The legendary fourteenth-century hero and savior of Vietnam has evolved as a key symbol of the nation as well as an efficacious deity in its spiritual pantheon. Today he is a ubiquitous, multivalent symbol of the contradictions of contemporary Vietnamese society. Intertwined with this rich ethnography is a work of self-interrogation and engagement with the author's complex and changing "home," and with the diverse women and men - intellectuals, Communist Party cadres, and market sellers alike - whose lives are centered to a significant degree around the cult of Saint Tran and other deities. The book is a contribution to the ethnography of Vietnam, cultural studies, and Asian studies and also an original and stimulating introduction to contemporary Vietnamese society.

The Magical Love

These are love poems, but Pham Thi Phuong Thao is not satisfied with conventional views, and of course does not want to enter the available ruts. She wants to find "other beauties" in poetry. For her, love is not only associated with poetry, but also helps people to transform their perspectives, realize the duality of life to remove their burdens and enjoy life. In the art of poetry, she has a sense of making poetic ideas fresh and rich in philosophy, and somewhat mystical. Her poetry is written in free verse form, that's why she can convey to the end the poetic idea in the most artistic way. (Poet Vuong Trong)

Illiberal Transitional Justice and the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia

This book examines the creation and operation of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), which is a hybrid domestic/international tribunal tasked with putting senior leaders of the Khmer Rouge on trial. It argues that the ECCC should be considered an example of illiberal transitional justice, where the language of procedure is strongly adhered to but political considerations often rule in reality. The Cambodian government spent nearly two decades addressing the Khmer Rouge past, and shaping its preferred narrative, before the involvement of the United Nations. It was a further six years of negotiations between the Cambodian government and the United Nations that determined the unique hybrid structure of the ECCC. Over more than a decade in operation, and with three people convicted, the ECCC has not contributed to the positive goals expected of transitional justice mechanisms. Through the Cambodian example, this book challenges existing assumptions and analyses of transitional justice to create a more nuanced understanding of how and why transitional justice mechanisms are employed.

21st Century Surface Science

Surface sciences elucidate the physical and chemical aspects of the surfaces and interfaces of materials. Of great interest in this field are nanomaterials, which have recently experienced breakthroughs in synthesis and application. As such, this book presents some recent representative achievements in the field of surface science, including synthesis techniques, surface modifications, nanoparticle-based smart coatings, wettability of different surfaces, physics/chemistry characterizations, and growth kinetics of thin films. In addition, the book illustrates some of the important applications related to silicon, CVD graphene, graphene oxide, transition metal dichalcogenides, carbon nanotubes, carbon nanoparticles, transparent conducting oxide, and metal oxides.

This book examines changing gender roles, relations and hierarchies in an ethnic minority community in Central Viet Nam. After decades of war, the community continued its self-sufficient way of life in this remote forested mountainous region, but in recent years has been forced to respond to severe climate threats combined with sudden and destabilizing socioeconomic and regulatory change. Through the use of both qualitative (interview-based) and quantitative research methods, the book offers insights into the complex interactions between climate, regulatory and socioeconomic changes – including, paradoxically, the emergence of significant problems for both the community and the environment...
