Explaining Norms

This book presents the concept of norms by four different philosophers. They discuss how norms emerge, persist, change, and how they serve to explain what we do.

This collection brings together significant new contributions to the Sraffa--based theories of production and distribution, from post-Keynesian arguments concerning monetary and macro economics to the history of thought and methodology. All of the authors are well established authorities in their field, and in this book they add stimulating and original pieces of analysis to the contemporary literature. Production, Distribution and Trade is divided into three parts. The first explores analytical issues in production and exchange theory, the second examines Postkeynesian Macroeconomics and the final part includes essays on the history of economic thought and methodology. This collection has b...

An Integrated Nonlinear Wind-Waves Model for Offshore Wind Turbines

This thesis presents a numerical model capable of simulating offshore wind turbines exposed to extreme loading conditions. External condition-based extreme responses are reproduced by coupling a fully nonlinear wave kinematic solver with a hydro-aero-elastic simulator. First, a two-dimensional fully nonlinear wave simulator is developed. The transient nonlinear free surface problem is formulated assuming the potential theory and a high-order boundary element method is implemented to discretize Laplace's equation. For temporal evolution a second-order Taylor series expansion is used. The code, after validation with experimental data, is successfully adopted to simulate overturning plunging br...

Bioinformatics of Genome Evolution: from Ancestral to Modern Metabolism Phylogenomics and Comparative Genomics to Understand Microbial Evolution

Bioinformatics, that is the interdisciplinary field that blends computer science and biostatistics with biological and biomedical sciences, is expected to gain a central role in next feature. Indeed, it has now affected several fields of biology, providing crucial hints for the understanding of biological systems and also allowing a more accurate design of wet lab experiments. In this work, the analysis of sequence data has be used in different fields, such as evolution (e.g. the assembly and evolution of metabolism), infections control (e.g. the horizontal flow of antibiotic resistance), ecology (bacterial bioremediation).

Bioeconomics and Sustainability

Economists from around the world discuss Georgescu-Roegen's (1906-94) theories in a number of areas, but especially on environmental and energy economics. They address such topics as how long neoclassical economists can continue to ignore his contribu

After a long period, in which the research focused mainly on industrial robotics, nowadays scientists aim to build machines able to act autonomously in unstructured domains, and to interface friendly with humans, while performing intelligently their assigned tasks. Such intelligent autonomous systems are now being intensively developed, and are ready to be applied to every field, from social life to modern enterprises. We believe the following years will be increasingly characterised by their extensive use. This is dramatically changing the whole scenario of human society.

Fair Division

Fair Division

Cutting a cake, dividing up the property in an estate, determining the borders in an international dispute - such problems of fair division are ubiquitous. Fair Division treats all these problems and many more through a rigorous analysis of a variety of procedures for allocating goods (or 'bads' like chores), or deciding who wins on what issues, when there are disputes. Starting with an analysis of the well-known cake-cutting procedure, 'I cut, you choose', the authors show how it has been adapted in a number of fields and then analyze fair-division procedures applicable to situations in which there are more than two parties, or there is more than one good to be divided. In particular they focus on procedures which provide 'envy-free' allocations, in which everybody thinks he or she has received the largest portion and hence does not envy anybody else. They also discuss the fairness of different auction and election procedures.

New Essays on Pareto's Economic Theory

Pareto's Manual of Political Economy, first published in 1905, introduced the analytical approach which has characterised a significant part of twentieth century economic theory. In particular, the Manual examined the ordinal representation of the individual choice, the issue of the general economic equilibrium and the Pareto optimality criterion for evaluating economic efficiency. The Manual also contained analyses of production, non-linear prices, non-competitive markets and the competition process, which have not yet been fully developed in modern mainstream economics. Based on Pareto’s groundbreaking ‘Manuale di Economia Politica’, this edited collection brings together a selection of essays from some of the most authoritative scholars of Pareto, who discuss the relevance of Pareto’s economics in the context of the present theoretical debate.

Opposing views on the merits of formal rational choice approaches as they have been applied to international security studies. Formal theories and rational choice methods have become increasingly prominent in most social sciences in the past few decades. Proponents of formal theoretical approaches argue that these methods are more scientific and sophisticated than other approaches, and that formal methods have already generated significant theoretical progress. As more and more social scientists adopt formal theoretical approaches, critics have argued that these methods are flawed and that they should not become dominant in most social-science disciplines. Rational Choice and Security Studie...
