In today's fast-paced, competitive environment, technology can no longer only be the province of engineers and R&D managers: it must become a central component of the strategy-making process. Accordingly, this book seeks to facilitate the integration of technological concerns into the business strategies of organizations. Richly illustrated with many case examples drawn from the authors' experiences, both in the US and Europe, the book takes a distinctly global perspective on the subject. It addresses the economic, organizational, as well as cultural implications of technology, . Of great value to lecturers and students of strategic management, business policy, engineering management and management of technology, as well as practitioners who require a broad global picture of the area, it blends European and American perspectives, provides comprehensive coverage, and provides an integrated perspective.

Business schools are facing ever increasing internationalization: students are far less homogenous than before, faculty members come from different countries, and teaching is carried out in second (or even third) languages. As a result business schools and their teachers wrestle with new challenges as these changes accelerate. Teaching and Learning at Business Schools brings together contributions from business school managers and educators involved in the International Teachers Programme; a faculty development programme started by Harvard Business School more than 30 years ago and now run by a consortium of the London Business School, Manchester Business School, Kellogg, Stern School of Business, INSEAD, HEC Paris, IAE Aix-en-Provence, IMD, SDA Bocconi Milan and Stockholm School of Economics. The book tackles themes both within the classroom - teaching across different contexts and cultures - and outside the classroom - leading and developing business schools, designing and running programmes, developing faculty members. The authors provide direction, ideas and techniques for transforming business education that are accessible to everyone.

Cooperative Strategy Competing Successfully through Strategic Alliances Pierre Dussauge and Bernard Garrette HEC-School of Management, France In recent years, such corporate giants as Boeing, Toyota, Nestlé, Philips, United Airlines, IBM, and Intel have increasingly turned to alliances in order to develop new products and technologies, enter new markets, and globalize their activities. Indeed, no one firm, however dominant, can beat the competition entirely on its own. Unfortunately, managers have found collaboration to be a difficult, and sometimes dangerous, strategy; they have often over-estimated the benefits of alliances while overlooking their pitfalls which only materialize over time...

The Rules of the Game in the Global Economy

This study has been long in the making, and the world has changed dramatically while we have been at work. We initially anticipated a substantial section on the Soviet-dominated Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA or "COMECON"), which offered an interesting contrast to the kind of international business regime typically found among market-oriented countries and industries. As we moved toward publi- tion, the CMEA vanished, and so we mention it only in passing. The USSR subsequently disintegrated into a Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). On the other hand, we began with the assumption that the historic "rule of capture" no long played a significant role in international econom...

New Silk Road: China Meets Europe In The Baltic Sea Region, The - A Business Perspective

The "Belt and Road" initiative announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013 aims at reviving the ancient trade routes connecting China to Europe and Africa: the "21st Century Maritime Silk Road" and the inland "Silk Road Economic Belt". Both maritime and land routes of the New Silk Road meet Europe in the Baltics — a region accounting for some 150 million inhabitants representing 30% of the total EU population. The maritime route enters Europe through the Mediterranean Sea before reaching the largest European seaports of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea up to Saint Petersburg in Russia. The land route starting from West China crosses Central Asia, Russia and Belarus before reaching th...

Rethinking Film Festivals in the Pandemic Era and After

This is an open access book. This edited collection aims to document the effects of Covid-19 on film festivals and to theorize film festivals in the age of social distancing. To some extent, this crisis begs us to consider what happens when festivals can’t happen; while films have found new (temporary) channels of distribution (most often in the forms of digital releases), the festival format appears particularly vulnerable in pandemic times. Imperfect measures, such as the move to a digital format, cannot recapture the communal experience at the very core of festivals. Given the global nature of the pandemic and the diversity of the festival phenomenon, this book features a wide range of case studies and analytical frameworks. With contributors including established scholars and frontline festival workers, the book is conceived as both a theoretical endeavour and a practical exploration of festival organizing in pandemic times.
