Hoe ziet de natuur er uit als je haar bestudeert zoals zij is? De bioloog Piet J. van den Hout observeert een jaar lang op aangrijpende wijze een Brabants heidegebied. Als bioloog onderzoekt Piet J. van den Hout de natuur jarenlang op basis van hypothesen. Hij doet prachtig en nuttig werk, maar realiseert zich gaandeweg dat hij als wetenschapper iets is kwijtgeraakt, iets wat hij in zijn jeugd nog had en waarvan het gemis steeds sterker wordt. Want waar is de betovering door de natuur gebleven? Van den Hout verlaat de wetenschap en wandelt de Regte Heide op, een door bossen en beekdalen omgeven heidegebied even ten zuiden van Tilburg. Een jaar lang kijkt hij, zonder vooraf opgestelde onderzoeksvraag, tot in de kleinste details naar het leven van dieren, planten en schimmels, naar hun samenwerking en hun strijd. Natuurlijk blijft hij ook de wetenschapper die wil begrijpen, maar hij gaat verder. Hij begeeft zich steeds dieper in de leefwereld van de vaste en tijdelijke bewoners van het gebied. Dat levert intieme ontmoetingen op met dieren die gaandeweg bekenden worden en hem weer terug weten te gidsen naar een wereld die hij lange tijd kwijt was.
Samaria, Samarians, Samaritans
Papers in this volume were presented at the seventh international conference of the Société d’Études Samaritaines held at the Reformed Theological Academy of Pápa, Hungary in July 17–25, 2008. The discussed Samaritan topics permeate different areas of biblical studies: The question of the Samaritan Pentateuch has a serious impact on the textual criticism of the Hebrew Bible. The pre-Samaritan text-type among the Dead Sea Scrolls, as well as the dating and isolation of Samaritan features of the Samaritan Pentateuch provide fresh and important data for gaining a better understanding of the composition of the Torah/Pentateuch. New reconstructions of the early history of the Samaritans have a great effect on the history of the Jewish people in the Persian and Hellenistic period. As a distinct group in the centuries around the turn of the Common Era in Palestine, Samaritans played an important role in the social and religious formation of early Judaism and early Christianity. Living for centuries under Islamic rule, Samaritans provide a good example of linguistic, cultural and religious developments experienced by ethnic and religious group in Islamic contexts.
Birds and Habitat
The successful conservation of bird species relies upon our understanding of their habitat use and requirements. In the coming decades the importance of such knowledge will only grow as climate change, the development of new energy sources and the needs of a growing human population intensify the, already significant, pressure on the habitats that birds depend on.
