This regional report is the product of the joint efforts of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the Inter-American Association of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering (AIDIS). The report assesses solid waste management in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) in the year 2010, and is the result of a year-long research and information analysis project supported by governmental agencies, NGOs, and universities from several countries of the region.

O trabalho conjunto da Organização Pan-Americana da Saúde (OPAS), o Banco Interamericano de Desenvolvimento (BID) e a Associação Interamericana de Engenharia Sanitária e Ambiental (AIDIS) gerou este relatório regional que realiza uma avaliação da gestão de resíduos sólidos na America Latina e Caribe no ano de 2010, e é o resultado de um ano de busca e analise de informação apoiada pelos organismos governamentais, ONGs e universidades nos diferentes países da Região. No presente relatório poderi-se-a encontrar um diagnóstico da situação da gestão dos resíduos sólidos na América Latina e Caribe, apoiado no levantamento de informação em vários municípios da Região, de acordo com procedimentos estatísticos que permitiram obter dados representativos da realidade de nossos países. Ao mesmo tempo, o documento reúne diferentes experiências bem sucedidas da Região que podem servir como exemplo de boas práticas a numerosos municípios da ALC que estejam menos desenvolvidos setorialmente.

El trabajo conjunto de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS), el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID) y la Asociación Interamericana de Ingeniería Sanitaria y Ambiental (AIDIS) ha generado este informe regional que realiza una evaluación de la gestión de residuos sólidos en América Latina y el Caribe al año 2010, y es el resultado de un año de búsqueda y análisis de información apoyada en los organismos gubernamentales, ONGs y universidades de los distintos países de la región. En el presente informe se podrá encontrar un diagnóstico de la situación del manejo de los residuos sólidos en América Latina y el Caribe, sustentado en el levantamiento de información en varios municipios de la región, de acuerdo a procedimientos estadísticos que permitieron obtener datos representativos de la realidad de nuestros países. Asimismo, el documento recoge distintas experiencias exitosas de la región que pueden servir como ejemplo de buenas prácticas a numerosos municipios de ALC que se encuentren menos desarrollados sectorialmente.
