This book offers a systematic historical analysis of the relationships between migration and the development of cities, including their physical, economic, and cultural evolution. The volume results from a comparative project that examines the interface between migration and the development of cities throughout different periods including current conditions. Nine strategic sites are examined: Three cities in Europe, three in Latin America and three in North America. The editors contribute to the analysis by summarizing lessons from the cases discussed and by providing a glimpse at the relevance of the study of migration and cities historically. Urbanization and Migration in Three Continents will be a key resource for academics, researchers, and students of sociology, migration studies, race and ethnic studies, history, anthropology, urban studies, and economics. This book was originally published as a special issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies.

"State of Return theoretically explores the concept of "return" and ethnographically traces different experiences of return migration across the globe with emphases on temporality, kinship, and citizenship. Las migraciones en el contexto de la Nueva Civilización son un fenómeno que hay que tratar de manera global como componentes clave en la construcción de las identidades del siglo XXI. Indagar las migraciones como fenómeno constructor de identidades nos facilita entenderlas y gestionarlas. Nos convierte en actores activos en la formación de las nuevas sociedades en vez de ser unos meros contempladores del fenómeno. Nador, ciudad fronteriza entre dos civilizaciones, es la sede ideal para acoger este encuentro.
This book examines the historiography of nineteenth century slavery from the perspective of the “second slavery.” The concept of the second slavery emphasizes the relationship between local histories and world-economic transformations. It breaks with conventional narratives of slavery by emphasizing the expansion of reconfigured slaveries in extensive new zones of commodity production in Brazil, Cuba and the US South as part of world-economic processes of decolonization, industrialization, urbanization, and the creation of mass markets. Thus, slavery was not a moribund institution. Capitalist modernity, liberal ideology, and anti-slavery from above or from below, faced a vigorous foe tha...
