O negro brasileiro e o cinema retrata a posição do negro na produção nacional cinematográfica nacional - sua atuação na frente e por trás das câmeras. O livro registra uma triste realidade: o papel do negro está sempre ligado às suas raízes de escravo. Escravo do segundo plano, ao receber quase sempre papéis secundários, com pouca relevância e destaque, ou condenado a representar arquétipos caricaturais: preto velho, negro de alma branca, nobre selvagem, malandro, favelado, crioulo doido, mulata boazuda, entre outros; escravo de uma condição social que dificulta o acesso ao estudo e à cultura e afunila suas chances de atuar na direção/produção nacional de filmes; escravo de sua cor de pele que é usada contra ele próprio, como sinônimo de inferioridade e de submissão; escravo de uma posição tímida da própria comunidade que ainda não tem consciência da importância de unir forças para exigir uma mudança no tratamento da sua imagem pela mídia e pelo cinema brasileiro.
