Percy Smith and a small band of amateur enthusiasts who saw it as their duty to record the lore and literature of Maori and other Polynesian peoples, then thought to be heading for extinction. By the Society and the Journal, like their main subjects, have confounded all expectations and flourished [The Journal] is one of the oldest continuously published anthropological journals in the world and has long been the premier journal of its kind in the Pacific region. Over the years the amateur scholars gave way to professional anthropologists, with the editorship of the JPS and the management of the Society gradually being transferred to the Anthropology Department of the University of Auckland from the 1950s."--Back cover.
