This is significant in the Buddhist tradition when prayers are conducted to facilitate the passing into another life. There are two parts to the book, firstly a selection of papers written by Pracha relating to Engaged Buddhism in contemporary society. He tackles topics such as globalisation, consumerism, education, ethnic conflict, violence and peace making. His writing indicates his deep thinking about the ills of modernisation process and how Buddhist dhamma is applicable in garnering another more authentic direction for society. Hooked!

At one time or another, most of us have experienced an all-consuming desire for a material object, a desire so strong that it seems like we couldn't possibly be happy without buying this thing. Yet, when we give in to this impulse, we often find ourselves feeling frustrated and empty. Advertisers, of course, aim to hook us in this way, and, from a global perspective, our tendency to get hooked fuels the rampant over-consumption that is having a devastating impact on the world's stability and on the environment. According to the contributors to this unique anthology, Buddhism can shed valuable light on our compulsions to consume. Craving and attachment—how they arise and how to free ourselv...

Visions of Development presents first-hand stories of groups and movements from many different religious and spiritual traditions that are working with impoverished communities in Africa, Asia and Latin America. It provides unique insights into how people's beliefs and spirituality can help to inform not only what they perceive 'development' to be but also how they go about achieving it. Through real-life examples of courageous and innovative work, the stories challenge much of the theory and practice of mainstream development agencies while also showing how religious inspiration can be a force for radical and positive change.
